Wat Phu Temple is a historical tourist site, not known for its beauty like misty sea or scenic views. The history of Wat Phu is very long; you don't need to know all if you are not a history student. Just enjoy the trip. I summarized it because I only know a little, just for fun.

Wat Phu Temple was built over a thousand years ago by the Khmer or Khemer people. They had conflicts with the Cham people and moved south to build Angkor Wat, which is bigger. So Wat Phu is older than Angkor Wat but smaller. Wat Phu was a place to worship spirits or Hindu gods. There were also human sacrifices here. When visiting Wat Phu, you should see the place where the sacrifices were made. It is a platform for sacrificing pure people, quite gruesome. Another interesting fact is that there is a path from Wat Phu to Angkor Wat.
They are currently researching this to revive the knowledge. Amazing! Wat Phu has a Shiva sanctuary with a smiling Buddha statue on top, which looks happy. This Buddha was built later because Hindus do not worship Buddha. It was built hundreds of years later. When visiting Wat Phu, you should pay respect to the smiling Buddha and see if it really smiles as I say. Wat Phu is a World Heritage Site, not only the temple but also Nang Sida Hall and Turtle Hall, which are far apart. However, Thai visitors usually only visit Wat Phu Temple.
Another World Heritage Site nearby is an ancient city from the same era as Wat Phu, located on the way to Wat Phu near Wat Phra Non. This city is called "Setthapura." There are some old walls and Wat Phra Non, and excavations are ongoing. To travel to Wat Phu Temple on your own, from Bangkok take a bus to Ubon Ratchathani, then from Ubon Bus Terminal take a bus to Pakse, which runs twice daily, morning and afternoon. From Pakse, there are buses from the southern bus station.
You can take several buses heading south such as to Nakasang or Don Khong and get off at Ban 31. There are motorcycle taxis, not regular but always available. From there, go to Ban Muang pier, just a few kilometers away, the fare is 10,000 kip. There are piers for large and small vehicles. If crossing to Bak Ngoy pier, the ferry fare to Champasak side is 5,000 kip per person. Upon arrival in Champasak, find accommodation or take a motorcycle taxi to the roundabout and walk from there. I stayed at Sai Thong Guesthouse.
Wat Phu Temple is 6 kilometers from Champasak town. Most rent bicycles for 10,000 kip per day to ride to Wat Phu Temple (see travel directions to Champasak here). Another way from Pakse is from Dao Rueang Market, where there are large songthaews to Ban Tha Muang. You can cross the river at Tha Muang pier to Champasak. I haven't tried this route because I traveled from Don Khong, got off at Ban 31, and took a motorcycle taxi in.
Summary of estimated travel costs to visit Wat Phu Temple and Champasak on your own: Bangkok to Ubon bus 700 baht / Ubon to Pakse bus 200 baht / Pakse to Tha Muang about 80 baht / ferry crossing 20 baht / motorcycle taxi to accommodation 40 baht / bicycle rental 40 baht. Total travel cost from Bangkok to Wat Phu is about this. Once here, there are many more places to visit, which I have shown as examples. See my Pakse travel info and follow along. mr.hotsia
