For those with limited time who only travel within Savannakhet city, I recommend waking up early and taking a walk along the Mekong River. You will see the morning lifestyle of Savannakhet people, giving alms, exercising. The view along the Mekong River looking towards Mukdahan city is beautiful. At night, use the same route walking past the old church along the Mekong River.
You will pass food stalls and smoothie shops by the Mekong River selling food, beer, grilled items, and small riverside shops to relax and enjoy the view of the Thai side. Savannakhet city is not lively all the time; it becomes quiet after around 10 PM. So, it is advisable to return to your accommodation by 10 or 11 PM. When I visited during a Buddhist holy day, there were krathong (floating offerings) sold along the street. Locals buy these to pay respect to the spirit shrines in front of their houses. I stayed at a small hotel not far from Savannakhet Ban Hao.
A simple room without air conditioning or internet, costing just over 200 baht per night. In the past, there was a bus from Savannakhet Ban Hao to Hue, but now buses from Hue only depart from the main bus station, not other places. I recommend if you plan to travel to Hue, stay one night in Savannakhet and take the morning bus to Hue. For nightlife in Savannakhet Ban Hao, across the street is a disco pub popular with Thai tourists who enjoy nightlife here. mr.hotsia January 2013 mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Savannakhet.
