The border crossing between Thailand and Laos in Mukdahan province is the Mukdahan-Savannakhet checkpoint, which is a major international border crossing.

This is one of the main routes connecting Thailand and Laos. From my experience, mr.hotsia, traveling through many border checkpoints, this one seems to be the strictest (on the Thai side). If you travel by car from Savannakhet, everyone must take their bags out for scanning. On my trip crossing, someone bought more than 1 carton of cigarettes and refused to take them out, which caused problems. They were fined heavily and had to discard the excess or have each person take only 1 carton. The Mukdahan-Savannakhet border also has a river crossing checkpoint.
This is the original checkpoint where you cross and immediately reach the town without needing to change to a songthaew (local transport), making boat travel more popular for city-to-city travelers. For tourists coming from Bangkok who arrive at Mukdahan Bus Station, it's convenient to take a vehicle directly across to Savannakhet by continuing at Savannakhet Bus Station. Mr.hotsia’s long trip itineraries usually enter via the land checkpoint and exit Thailand via the river checkpoint for further travel.
I find the river checkpoint more convenient and faster since you don’t waste time waiting; mostly locals cross and don’t require long document checks like the land checkpoint, which has more foreigners and longer waits. mr.hotsia January 2011. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Savannakhet.
