Vietnam connects with the Laos-Bao Vietnam border route. The Savannakhet border checkpoint of Laos leads to Savannakhet city to connect onward to Mae Sot crossing into Myanmar (there are buses from Savannakhet to Mae Sot). Savannakhet is therefore an important port city of Laos, comparable to Vientiane. Savannakhet has tourist attractions known to Thai people such as That Ing Hang Stupa. Other places popular with foreigners include the Muang Phon route, the Tripitaka Library, Monkey Forest, Nong Pa Fa, and Bueng Sui. The distance from Savannakhet city to these attractions is about
70 kilometers. Increasingly more people are visiting. In Savannakhet, there are motorcycles for rent which makes traveling convenient. You can read about my guided tours. For those who like gambling, Savannakhet has a large casino called Savannakhet Vegas, where many Thai people come to try their luck. I saw many cars with Thai license plates. Savannakhet offers views of the Mekong River and a beautiful bridge crossing the river. The people of Savannakhet are lively and sociable, making travel here enjoyable.
Traveling to Savannakhet is not difficult because it is located opposite Mukdahan. You can cross from Mukdahan province via the Mekong River bridge by taking a bus from the bus terminal to Savannakhet bus terminal. Buses run all day. Alternatively, you can take a boat from the Indochina Market area in Mukdahan to Savannakhet. I stayed several nights in Savannakhet province for almost a week. I recommend staying at Saiy Suk Guesthouse, a wooden house with a kind owner. Prices start at 30,000 kip or 120 baht. It is clean.
Mr.Hotsia recommends it. Regarding motorcycle rentals, there are only a few shops with prices around 80,000 kip per 24 hours. Renting from hotels is more expensive, up to 100,000 kip (400 baht). Many Thai people visit Savannakhet, so kip currency is widely accepted throughout the riverside city, but deeper inland kip is used exclusively. For traveling in Laos, Mr.Hotsia uses Laos' 3G internet service nationwide. The price is 200 baht per month for 1 GB.
This is sufficient for checking email and Facebook comfortably. If you want to use more data, you pay a little extra. Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar all have 3G networks, but Thailand still does not (only some trial areas). Mr.Hotsia recommends hotels in Savannakhet. Take a walk in Savannakhet and enjoy grilled bananas.
