The population is nearly three hundred thousand, consisting of various ethnic groups, mostly Hmong, Mien, Phu Thai, and Akha. Udomxai city has the Nam Ko river flowing through it, not the Nam Bang river. Does the Nam Bang river sound familiar? Pakbeng is more familiar. Pakbeng is the mouth of the Nam Bang river that joins the Mekong River at Ban Pakbeng (sometimes pronounced Pak Biang). The main route from Huay Sai by slow boat to Luang Prabang requires a one-night stop at Pakbeng, which is also in Udomxai province.

I stayed in Udomxai this time for only one night before continuing by car to Phongsaly, so my sightseeing time was limited. Next time, I will take a boat from Huay Sai and bring photos from Pakbeng. This trip, I explored Muang Xai city first. Muang Xai is a transit town with not much excitement. It has fewer restaurants and accommodations than Luang Namtha. The Nam Bang river flows through the city center, offering a nice view. Near the bridge neck, people open beer shops to relax and enjoy the river view.

There is a karaoke bar, but I haven't had the chance to visit yet. Accommodations in Muang Xai are mostly near the Udomxai bus station, with many options priced around 200-300 baht per night. Most accommodations offer internet service. Udomxai or Muang Xai is the capital of Udomxai province, surrounded by Phongsaly, Luang Prabang, and Xayaburi provinces. During the national liberation war and political change, Highway 1 intersects with Highway 4 here.

It was once a center where China sent aid to the Lao movement around 1970. Today, the old Chinese consulate building has been converted into a hotel. The Lao government repaid China for road construction costs by granting timber concessions in the Udomxai valley, leading to deforestation in the area. Currently, China has influence through trade, with large markets. The Nam Ko river flows through Muang Xai city. Upon arrival, you will see the monument of Khairosorn.

This spot is a meeting point and relaxation area for locals. To the southeast, you can see the golden stupa on a hill in the city center called Phou Phra That, an important religious site for Lao people and a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the city surrounded by complex mountain ranges. On top, there is a standing Buddha statue in the blessing posture, completed and opened for worship in December 2009.

Since I had little time in this city and arrived from Luang Namtha late with rain, I had to check into accommodation. The next morning, I woke up around 5 a.m. to photograph the Muang Xai morning market, which is very interesting. I will share the photos in the next part. After returning from the market, I captured images of locals making sticky rice alms in the city as proof that Hotsia travels independently. I tried shooting against the light here. With some time left, I hired a tuk-tuk.

I asked to be taken to pay respects to the blessing Buddha statue and the stupa at Phou Phra That. The tuk-tuk fare was affordable, about 80 baht, including the market and the stupa visit. I highly recommend visiting Muang Xai to pay respects at the stupa and enjoy the view of Udomxai city from above. The breeze up there is cool and refreshing, and the city looks beautiful from this high vantage point. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Muang Xai. The city center of Udomxai is where a Chinese department store has opened.

Photo taken from the Nam Kor pedestrian bridge, written as 'Khua Nam Kor' (Namkor bridge). 'Khua' means bridge. Morning alms offering with locals giving sticky rice. I am hiring a tuk-tuk to go up to Phou Phra That. Arrived at Phou Phra That, the view from the top clearly shows Muang Xai city. Even early in the morning, others arrived before me to pay respects. In Laos, they build Naga statues at temples. View from the top of Muang Xai stupa. The blessing Buddha statue. Morning atmosphere from Phou Phra That hill. The Buddha statue is called Blessing Buddha. Udomxai stupa.

Read the history here. Lao language is not difficult to read.
