Today I traveled and stayed here for one night, which helped me understand this town better. Pak Beng belongs to Udomxai District. Since it is the mouth of the Beng River, it is called Pak Beng. Pak Beng is just past the boat stop for traveling to Muang Ngeun, not far away. At that point, a bridge is being constructed between Borikhamxay and Udomxai Districts. Muang Ngeun is just a short distance from Thung Chang, Nan Province. This has been an official international border checkpoint for several years.
Pak Beng is rapidly developing with continuous construction, similar to Muang Ngoy in Luang Prabang District (Ou River). Pak Beng town has dozens of guesthouses with room rates from 150-300 baht per night for simple rooms. There are Thai, Lao, Western, and Indian restaurants open here. The slow boat arrives at Pak Beng around 5 PM. Tourists check into accommodations and depart for Luang Prabang at 9 AM. Most prepare food and drinks to eat on the boat.
When I stayed in Pak Beng, it rained heavily in the morning, causing water outages and power cuts. So if you stay here, be sure to shower and charge your batteries to avoid inconvenience.
