Irrawaddy Region: The Land of the Rice and Sea Delta

When talking about Myanmar, many might think of major cities like Bagan or Tanintharyi. But for me, mr.hotsia, the Irrawaddy Region is one of the areas full of charm and vibrant life. The Irrawaddy Region is located in the delta area of the Irrawaddy River, covering over 35,000 square kilometers. It is the most populous region in Myanmar, with over 6.5 million people, the highest compared to other states or regions in the country.

The capital city of the Irrawaddy Region isPatheinwhich serves as the commercial and cultural center of the area. The Irrawaddy Region is also Myanmar's most important rice-producing area in the 21st century, with vast and fertile agricultural land nourished by the Irrawaddy River and its many tributaries such as the Ngawun River, Pathein River, and Toe River, which provide moisture to the rice fields and support the local way of life.

Travel and Real Experience at Ngwesaung Beach

On March 7, 2016, I, mr.hotsia, started my journey from Pathein city by air-conditioned van departing at 8:00 AM. The trip took about 2 hours on fairly good roads, covering approximately 40 kilometers to reachNgwesaung Beacha famous beach in the Irrawaddy Region. The bus fare was 3,500 kyats per person, about 120 baht, which is quite affordable for travel in Myanmar.

Upon arrival at Ngwesaung Beach, I chose to stay at Luxer Deluxe Hotel, normally priced at 35 USD per night but negotiated down to 30 USD, which was very worthwhile for the seaside atmosphere and comfort. The next morning, I rented a motorcycle for 10,000 kyats per day to explore the small town by the beach and travel to a nearby fishing village.

Ngwesaung Beach is very long, about 40 kilometers, but the town area with communities and shops is only about 300 meters wide. Most foreign tourists stay in the town zone for convenience in finding food and evening strolls. The beach side has several luxury hotels but very few restaurants. I only rode halfway along the beach and was already satisfied with the sea views and peaceful atmosphere.

Seaside Life and Local Food in Pathein

That evening, I relaxed by the sea sipping fresh coconut while watching local Burmese people enjoy swimming in the sea. The atmosphere was simple and peaceful, very different from popular beaches in Thailand. I ordered Burmese-style stir-fried crab, which had a rich and unique flavor for me. There were also sea urchins sold at 1,000 kyats each; I had three, savoring every bite. Although I experienced some stomach upset afterward, it was worth the experience.

At night, I ate giant oysters and local fried rice before planning for the next day to have a meal with locals and learn how to cook traditional Burmese dishes. Here, I truly experienced the real life of people living by the river and sea.

Pathein City and Nearby Attractions

Besides Ngwesaung Beach, the Irrawaddy Region also has other important cities such asHakha Cityin Chin State, which I have traveled to and written about in previous articles. Although traveling to Hakha can be somewhat difficult, it is a fascinating gateway to Chin State. Other cities in the Irrawaddy Region include Hinthada, Myaungmya, Maubin, and Pyapon, each with its own unique charm.

This region also includes Mount Yakhai, part of the Arakan Mountains to the west, which provides a beautiful natural backdrop and high biodiversity. Those who enjoy hiking or nature exploration can plan a thorough visit.

Summary and Recommendations for Travelers to the Irrawaddy Region

For me, mr.hotsia, the Irrawaddy Region is not just a “rice-producing area” or “river delta” but a land full of vibrant local life and culture, with simplicity and warmth from the locals who sincerely welcome travelers.

Traveling from Pathein to Ngwesaung Beach is convenient and short, with affordable accommodations ranging up to good quality. The local food is what made me feel this trip was most worthwhile. Try sitting by the sea, watching Burmese life, and tasting fresh seafood from the Irrawaddy River and the Andaman Sea.

If you want to add more travel routes in Myanmar, I recommend checking outTravel to Hakha CityandMonywa Citywhich are important connection points between Chin State and Sagaing Region, places I have also visited.

Don't forget to prepare your heart for the simplicity and sincerity of the locals, as that is the deep charm of the Irrawaddy Region that I, mr.hotsia, will never forget.
