Monywa: Gateway to the land of Sagaing and Chin culture

When talking about a city that still retains the charm of traditional Myanmar in the northwest of Mandalay, the name ofMonywadefinitely comes to my mind, mr.hotsia, without a doubt. This city is located in Sagaing region, about 136 kilometers from Mandalay, and it is also an important gateway for traveling toChin Statewhich offers diverse culture and nature to explore.

On my first day arriving in Monywa, I chose to travel by van from Mandalay in the morning. The van departed at 8:00 AM, taking about 3 and a half hours at an affordable price of only 180 baht. I arrived in Monywa around 11:30 AM. The journey was not too difficult, but the first thing I noticed was the dusty atmosphere of the city. Although it looked ordinary, it had the charm of a small town full of lively local people.

Accommodation in Monywa: The value I chose myself

Regarding accommodation in Monywa, I want to share my honest experience. At first, I spent several hours looking for hotels in the city with a budget of about 600 baht per night, but most hotels had dusty environments and cigarette smells that I couldn't tolerate. Finally, I decided to stay atMonywa Hotelwhich costs about 45 USD or around 1300 baht per night. It might seem more expensive than others, but for me, it was very worthwhile. The hotel is clean, fully equipped, and well located near the city center.

The internet here is decent; although a bit slow, it is sufficient for checking emails or updating social media. More convenient than I expected. I also heard that Win Unity Resort, located by KanTharyar Lake, offers massage and spa services for those who want to relax after heavy sightseeing.

Local lifestyle and food: Morning and night markets not to be missed

Monywa is a city where people still live simply. The morning market is the heart of the city. I explored a local market near the train station. What impressed me was the fresh food and ingredients: local vegetables, fish, and a variety of fruits sold by villagers, reflecting the abundance of the Chindwin River flowing through this city.

In the evening, the night market by the river near General Aung San's monument, the father of Aung San Suu Kyi, is filled with international food, including Burmese, Chinese, and Indian dishes blended harmoniously. What impressed me was the atmosphere where locals and tourists gathered to enjoy meals outdoors together joyfully.

One of the dishes I tried was local food with a mild flavor and fragrant spices. I recommend tasting local dishes at the night market to truly experience the authentic taste of Monywa.

Getting around the city and must-visit places

Monywa is not a very large city, so getting around is convenient and easy, especially by motorized trishaws, which cost no more than 2 USD per trip, much cheaper than taxis. Most trishaws can quickly and flexibly take you to important places in the city.

For tourists wanting to see distant sites like the world's largest reclining Buddha (Maha Bodhi Tahtaung) or standing Buddha statues nearby, trishaws and taxis are available. I recommend renting a vehicle for convenience and to save time.

Monywa, culture, and connection to Chin State

Although Monywa is in Sagaing region, its location near the Indian border, about 200 kilometers away, and withChin Statein between, makes the culture here diverse and interesting. I saw that some locals have sharp features, and Mon houses are harmoniously mixed in the area.

For those interested in traveling from Monywa to Hakha, the capital of Chin State, you can travel via Kale-Kalaymyo, a route I have traveled and recommend trying.Read about the travel experience to HakhaFor more information

Additional tips for travelers

If you are planning to visit Monywa, mr.hotsia recommends preparing for the weather and considerable dust, especially in the hot season. Choose accommodation with good standards, such as Monywa Hotel where I stayed, to ensure restful and safe stays from dust and smoke.

Currency exchange and mobile use in this city still have limitations. The internet is not very fast. I recommend buying a Telenor or MPT SIM card, which works well for checking information and communication.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia

Monywa may not be a famous tourist city in Myanmar, but for me, it is a great starting point to explore the cultural diversity and lifestyle of people in Sagaing and Chin State. The travel is not too difficult, accommodation options are good, fresh and abundant food markets, and interesting religious and natural attractions all make Monywa a city I want to visit again.
