Recommended hotels in Monywa, Chin State, Myanmar by mr.hotsia
When talking about traveling in northern Myanmar, especially in the Sagaing region like Monywa, which is the capital of this area and the gateway to Chin State, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit and truly experience the lifestyle here. I must say finding accommodation in this city is not easy for travelers who want comfort and cleanliness.
From my experience, I spent several hours looking for hotels in Monywa. The main options in the city are limited, and most have issues with heavy dust, strong cigarette smells, or are located outside the city near the bus station, making travel into town difficult and unsafe at night.
Monywa Hotel: A Worthwhile Option Despite the High Price
In the end, I decided to stay atMonywa Hotelwhich was the most expensive accommodation on my trip, costing about 1,300 THB per night or approximately 45 USD. For this city, that is much more expensive than other places, but I can confidently say it was "worth it" because it is clean, safe, and located in the city center. Traveling to markets or tourist spots is much more convenient than elsewhere.
Although the price is higher than cheap hotels found along main streets, those budget accommodations are full of dust and strong cigarette smells that disturb rest. Also, hotels located outside the city near the bus station are not suitable for beginners or solo travelers because traveling in and out is quite difficult and unsafe at night.
Internet and Communication in Monywa
Regarding internet in Monywa, although available in hotels, the speed is very slow, just enough to check emails or upload to Facebook. If you want continuous internet connection, I recommend buying a SIM card from Myanmar telecom providers such asTelecom Myanmar (MPT)orTelenorBoth providers work well with speeds suitable for communication and light social media updates.
Other Hotel Options in Monywa
If you want a different atmosphere and spa services, I recommend another hotel calledWin Unity Resort HotelThis hotel is located next to KanTharyar Lake, which has a shady atmosphere and is suitable for relaxation. However, it is quite far from the central market and food areas. If you want to explore nightlife or easily find food, this hotel might not be ideal. The price is similar to Monywa Hotel, about 1,300 THB per night.
For me, mr.hotsia, who enjoys satisfying trips without focusing on luxury but on convenience and safety, Monywa Hotel is the best choice in this city. Although the price is high, it is worth the comfort and ease of travel.
Atmosphere and Transportation in Monywa
Monywa is a large city blending local culture and multiple ethnic groups, including Burmese and Mon people with distinctive appearances and cultures. Traveling here from Mandalay is convenient by minivan bus, costing about 180 THB and taking approximately 3.5 hours.
After arriving in Monywa, I spent time exploring markets and local restaurants. I found that it has the largest reclining Buddha in the world and a beautiful lake temple, as well as KanTharyar Lake as a city relaxation spot. Walking around the city in the evening is relaxing and offers a real experience of Burmese life.
Connecting to the Next Trip in Chin State
Monywa is a good stopover before heading to Hakha, the capital of Chin State, which is a much more remote and challenging area to travel. For detailed travel information to Hakha, you can read the articleTraveling to Hakhawhere I share an in-depth experience.
I, mr.hotsia, want everyone planning to visit northern Myanmar to prepare well for accommodation and travel. Monywa may not have as many lodging options as bigger cities, but it has charm and is worth visiting. See you in the next article!
