Shinbyu Novice Ordination in Myitkyina, Kachin State, Myanmar
The first time I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the Shinbyu novice ordination ceremony, known locally asShinbyuin Myitkyina, Kachin State, was a deeply moving and exciting experience. The grandeur of the procession and the ritual details blending Burmese and Tai Yai cultures made me stop and immerse myself more deeply than anyone else.
This novice ordination ceremony is called “Shinbyu” in Burmese, a grand tradition to show respect and devotion to Buddhism. The Tai Yai people in Kachin State have a similar ceremony calledPoy Sang Longwhich is equally beautiful and intricate.
Impressions from the Field in Myitkyina
I traveled by car from Mandalay to Myitkyina, taking the afternoon until the next morning. Although some road construction was ongoing, it significantly reduced travel time. I arrived in Myitkyina on a bright morning, greeted by a lively city atmosphere full of the natural charm and well-preserved traditions of Kachin State.Read more about the journey to Myitkyina
At the time of the ceremony, I followed the long procession along the main street. Everyone wore traditional ethnic costumes and ancient-style ordination robes in bright colors. I saw the boy about to be ordained dressed in clean white, sitting on an elephant adorned with woven fabrics and colorful flowers, reflecting the faith and significance of the ceremony clearly.
Unique Procession and Rituals
The procession included local music performances, dances, and carrying religious symbols such as golden umbrellas, ancient swords, and colorful silk cloths, each with deep meanings according to Burmese and Tai Yai traditions. I witnessed wholehearted community cooperation in this ceremony, with both adults and children helping to prepare and participate.
Besides the beauty of the procession, the surrounding atmosphere in Myitkyina was equally charming. I had the chance to stroll through the Myitkyina morning market by the Irrawaddy River, filled with fresh local produce, fish, and traditional foods that reminded me of the close connection to Kachin people's way of life.Read more about the Myitkyina morning market
Local Life and Cuisine in Myitkyina
I stopped to taste local dishes at a small shop near the market, enjoying fermented fish and freshly made fish balls following traditional Kachin recipes. The fermented fish was piled high in a basin, looking impressive. The fresh vegetables used in the dishes were crisp, and the serving on green leaves was natural and simple, making me feel like I was truly eating as a local.
Travel and Convenience in Myitkyina are improving. Roads have gotten much better, and the overnight trip from Mandalay to Myitkyina is now comfortable, making it convenient for travelers wanting to deeply experience Kachin culture.Read about traveling to Indawgyi Lake in Kachin Statewhich is not far from Myitkyina and another destination I highly recommend.
Connecting to Attractions in Kachin State
Besides the Shinbyu ceremony, Kachin State offers interesting natural attractions such as the Irrawaddy River source at Mitsohn, where the Mali Hka and Mekha rivers meet. I recommend renting a motorcycle from the hotel to explore nature and roadside villages on the way to Mitsohn. Wearing a helmet is mandatory when riding in Myitkyina city. This fun and challenging experience left a strong impression on me, mr.hotsia.Visit the Irrawaddy River Source in Myitkyina
