Backpacking in Kachin State, Myanmar: The Charm of Fish Spearing by Tai Red Girls at Indawgyi Lake

Enchanting Luang Sen Fish Scooping Red Tai Girls by the Lakeside, Indawgyi, Kachin State

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar, a destination full of the charm of Red Tai people's lifestyle and peaceful waterside nature. On the first day of arrival, I stayed at a local military guesthouse not far from the lake. However, there was actually a homestay run by villagers nearby, which I tried to contact to move to but was not permitted. Eager to experience the real life of the Red Tai people, I instead asked to cook meals at that homestay.

The homestay atmosphere was warm and homey. The young woman who welcomed me was of mixed Red Tai and Burmese descent. Although her Thai was not fluent, her smile and generosity made the three meals I had there some of my first lasting impressions of Indawgyi. For breakfast, I visited the small morning market by the lake community, which offered a variety of fresh and local foods. The market atmosphere felt like the heart of the entire community.

For lunch, I tried making a simple homemade mango sticky rice using ingredients sourced from the community. The sweet, creamy ripe mango combined with the soft sticky rice reminded me of the warmth of home, like eating food made by my mother. Dinner was a simple, authentic local meal full of delicious flavors and the meaningful experience of sharing food with the community.

Lakeside Homestay at Indawgyi: Convenient and Full of Charm

Most homestays at Indawgyi are separate guest houses from the owners' homes, equipped with beds and mosquito nets, which are essential due to the many mosquitoes and insects in the area. The approximate price is around 500 baht per night, including some meals (if I remember correctly). I recommend choosing a homestay if you have limited time, as it allows close contact with local life and access to unique local food. There are about three homestays at Indawgyi, all of which I have stayed at and experienced fully.

For traveling to Indawgyi, I have previously written about my experience in an articleJourney to Indawgyi Lake, Kachin Statewhich details the improved and more comfortable route from better roads. Buses from Yangon depart around 3 PM and arrive at Indawgyi the next morning, stopping first at Hpakant town, then taking a shared truck for about 1.5 hours to Indawgyi.

Morning Market and Lakeside Lifestyle in Indawgyi Town

The morning market in Indawgyi differs from markets I've seen in other towns because people here still live closely with the lake and nature. The market is full of fresh goods, especially fish and vegetables caught or grown by locals. Products are displayed on fresh green leaves, a sight rare in big cities. This market is not only a place to buy and sell but also a community meeting point and a true source of local cultural learning.

One of my impressions was seeing Red Tai girls in their beautiful and distinctive traditional costumes. They helped prepare food and manage market stalls. The Red Tai girl I met at the homestay was of mixed Red Tai and Burmese heritage, so her Thai had a unique accent, but her friendliness and warmth were almost indistinguishable from Thai people.

Connecting Experiences with Myitkyina City and the Origin of the Irrawaddy River

To understand Indawgyi's context more deeply, I recommend readingJourney to Myitkyina Citywhich is a nearby major city and travel hub in Kachin State, and you can also extend your trip toThe Origin of the Irrawaddy River at Mitzonan important water source in Myanmar not far from there.

Myitkyina impressed me with its cultural diversity and colorful morning market, while Indawgyi, a small lakeside community, has its own unique charm in traditional lifestyle and rare tranquility not found in big cities.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

Visiting the enchanting Luang Sen Fish Scooping Red Tai Girls by Indawgyi Lake was a deeply enriching and heartwarming travel experience beyond ordinary trips. I learned about people's lifestyles, meaningful home-style food, and experienced the true nature of Kachin State. Although travel and accommodation were not as comfortable as in big cities, that is the charm that makes me want to return and recommend everyone to try this atmosphere at least once in their life.
