Behind the Scenes of Nong Neneae's Clip at Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar. I can say this place is not only about beautiful nature but also the local lifestyle here is richer and more fascinating than expected. On this trip, I chose to travel by motorcycle to truly feel the atmosphere around the lake and traveled with Nong “Neneae,” a local village girl with a natural charm.
At first, I asked the motorcycle driver to contact some local girls in the nearby village to guide the tour. We shortlisted two or three, and finally, it was Nong Neneae. She is a simple village girl dressed in plain traditional clothes but looks very beautiful and sincere. Nong Neneae and I rode separate motorcycles and set off together, riding through rice fields and small villages around Indawgyi Lake, witnessing the simple and warm lifestyle of the locals.
I really liked this feeling — not just seeing beautiful views but truly experiencing the way of life here. Talking with Nong Neneae helped me learn more about local stories and culture. Additionally, we visitedIndawgyi Lake PagodaLocated on an island in the middle of the lake, it is a very beautiful and peaceful spot. I had lunch there with Nong and the team. The atmosphere under the shade of trees by the lake was incredibly relaxing.
After that, we arranged to cook dinner at Nong Neneae’s house, which was a very memorable experience. I bought salted snakehead fish from Indawgyi, a local specialty, and prepared it with local herbs and salad according to the recipe that Nong and her family have been making. I helped film every step, from preparing ingredients to sitting down for dinner together by candlelight. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with relatives and the motorcycle team who had been guiding me for days joining us.
Indawgyi Lake: A Destination You Must Experience Yourself
Indawgyi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Myanmar, located in Kachin State. Traveling there is not as difficult as you might think. Roads in Myanmar have improved a lot. Traveling overnight from Yangon to Indawgyi Lake to arrive in the morning is comfortable. I recommend using the northern bus line that passes through Myitkyina and Hpakant. Along the way, there is an interesting morning market in Hpakant.Myitkyina Morning MarketVery lively with food and local lifestyle
Accommodations around the lake are limited, mostly simple guesthouses and homestays like the Indaw Mahar Guesthouse or Lone Ton (Lone Ton House), where I stayed without prior booking. These places are close to local life. I truly saw how locals live because these accommodations are often managed by local military, but it never felt uncomfortable.
Motorcycle: The Perfect Vehicle to Explore Around Indawgyi Lake
For me, motorcycles are the best way to explore Kachin State, especially around Indawgyi Lake, because some roads are still unsuitable for large cars and allow us to freely stop at small villages. I rented a motorcycle from a guesthouse in Myitkyina city for about 350 baht per day, including a helmet. Riding here requires caution as some routes are rough and dusty, but the beautiful scenery along the way makes you forget the fatigue.
Along the way, Nong Neneae and I stopped to see the local lifestyle focused on agriculture and traditional fishing, especially fishing in Indawgyi Lake, famous for fresh and delicious snakehead fish and various other fish. Locals prepare traditional salted snakehead fish, which I used to cook dinner at Nong Neneae’s house as mentioned earlier.
Local Food at Indawgyi Lake and the Warmth of the Community
The food here emphasizes freshness and bold flavors typical of Myanmar mixed with Kachin-style cooking. I was impressed with the salted Indawgyi snakehead fish prepared with local herbs and the perfectly balanced spicy, sour, sweet, and salty salad. Sharing dinner with Nong Neneae’s family and relatives in their small home was an experience hard to find elsewhere.
Besides the food, I learned that the locals have warm, supportive relationships with each other. This trip made me feel like a part of a small community in Kachin State. For anyone wanting to experience Myanmar in a deep and authentic way, I recommend visiting Indawgyi Lake and be sure to arrange a local guide like Nong Neneae to show you around.
