Behind the Kitchen with a Tai Dam Woman by Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar

If mr.hotsia were to tell a story about a journey that left a lasting impression, one of them would be when I experienced the lifestyle of the Tai Dam people in Longkok Village by Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar. It was a time to savor local food and witness a life that continues simply and beautifully, as if stepping back several decades.

Longkok Village is located on the western shore of Indawgyi Lake. From the safe house where I stayed, it took about half an hour by motorcycle to reach the lake’s iconic floating monastery. I was fortunate to meet a Tai Dam woman living a traditional lifestyle. She wore the Tai Dam traditional costume, taught me how to cook, plant rice, and prepared meals for me amidst her family. The atmosphere was warm and full of sincerity.

That day in the kitchen was not just about cooking but a lesson that deepened my understanding of the Tai Dam culture and way of life. They still use water from wells that every household must carry themselves for cooking and rely on home-grown vegetable gardens. The fresh vegetables they harvest are unlike those found in typical markets. Most residents of Longkok Village work as farmers, ensuring food security and a self-sufficient lifestyle.

On another evening, I returned to the same house to learn how to make Tai Dam desserts, which use natural ingredients and meticulous preparation methods. The Tai Dam woman and her relatives worked together to make various sweets and dishes, resembling a family gathering where I felt the warmth and strong community bonds.

What impressed me most was the simplicity of life preserved here, reminiscent of old Thailand, as if time stood still. By the beautiful and peaceful Indawgyi Lake, anyone who has the chance to visit, I, mr.hotsia, invite you to experience and learn about the Tai Dam way of life here.Indawgyi Lake, Kachin StateBefore change replaces these traditions

Journey to Longkok Village and Indawgyi Lake

For those interested in visiting Indawgyi Lake, traveling from Yangon to northern Kachin State in Myanmar has become much easier. Roads have improved, allowing overnight bus rides to Myitkyina in about 15 hours. From Myitkyina, take a local minibus for about 1.5 hours to Indawgyi Lake. Along the way, you can stop to explore Hopin’s lively morning market, full of local life and foods to try.Read more about traveling to Myitkyina

Accommodations around Indawgyi Lake are limited, with guesthouses and homestays mostly managed by the military, but prices are affordable and reasonably comfortable. Longkok Village itself has small homestays for tourists. I stayed here, which allowed me to be close to the locals and learn their culture intimately, almost becoming part of the family.

Tai Dam Food Culture and Lifestyle

The food of the Tai Dam people I tasted was not only delicious but also rich in cultural meaning hidden in every step. From locally grown rice, fresh vegetables from kitchen gardens, to well water that every household must carry themselves, it is a lifestyle truly dependent on nature.

When I sat down to cook with the Tai Dam woman, cooking became a ritual full of love and care. Every step, from preparing ingredients to cooking, showed dedication and wisdom passed down through generations. Similarly, the local desserts use no exotic ingredients but have a unique flavor all their own.

I recommend everyone interested in the food culture and traditional lifestyle of Kachin State’s people to visit here. Besides tasting rare local dishes, you will learn a simple yet fulfilling way of life full of happiness and stability.

Connecting to Travel in Kachin State and Myitkyina

If you have more time in Kachin State, don’t miss traveling to Myitkyina, not far from Indawgyi Lake. Myitkyina is a city rich in history and the source of the Irrawaddy River. It has a bustling morning market and many local foods to try, which I have documented in an article.Myitkyina Morning Market, Kachin State, MyanmarandExploring the Source of the Irrawaddy River, Myitkyina, Kachin Statewhich will complete your travel experience

Travel in Kachin State has become much more convenient with rapidly developing roads. Public transport and VIP sleeper buses take less time. I recommend planning trips from Myitkyina to villages around Indawgyi Lake to truly experience diverse lifestyles and cultures.

Closing Remarks from mr.hotsia

I, mr.hotsia, believe the best journeys are not about comfort or famous places but about experiencing real life, learning cultures and lifestyles that preserve their uniqueness. Longkok Village by Indawgyi Lake is one such place. Cooking with the Tai Dam woman and her family helped me understand that simplicity and connection to nature are the heart of happiness.

For anyone seeking a unique journey and wanting to experience Myanmar from a genuine perspective, I, mr.hotsia, recommend coming here. You will surely love Indawgyi Lake and the Tai Dam people as much as I do.
