Behind the Charm of the Girl's Cooking Skills at Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar
When talking about traveling to Kachin State in Myanmar, the name Indawgyi Lake always ranks first in my heart, mr.hotsia, because it is the largest freshwater lake in Myanmar and a diverse habitat of both nature and indigenous cultures you will never forget.
Visiting Indawgyi Lake is not very easy, but not too difficult either. If you start from Yangon, I recommend taking a northern bus route passing through Myitkyina until you arrive at Hopin early in the morning, then take a local pickup truck for about 1.5 hours to Indawgyi.Read detailed travel information to Indawgyi Lakethat I have previously written.
What impressed me the most was seeing the simple lifestyle of the lakeside villagers who remain truly connected to nature. The locals mainly fish for a living, catching mostly small fish about 5 centimeters long using small nets or surface traps. I walked to the lakeshore to observe the villagers preparing their boats for morning fishing. When I had the chance, I chatted with them warmly and asked to join their trip to capture their real life.
Going out on the boat with the villagers allowed me to see interesting fishing methods including traps and nets. They rarely catch large fish like tilapia or giant snakehead to maintain the lake's ecological balance. I also had the opportunity to share breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a local family, where most dishes were simply prepared with freshly caught fish, tasting wonderfully flavorful. This is the true charm of the girl's cooking skills that I, mr.hotsia, wanted to discover.
However, visiting here has some limitations because the main accommodations in Indawgyi are military guesthouses and homestays under military supervision. I stayed atIndaw Mahar Guesthousewhich is affordable and reasonably comfortable, but staying overnight directly with villagers is not permitted, so I had to return to the guesthouse every night.
Life and Food by Indawgyi Lake
One unforgettable impression was seeing Kachin housewives preparing local dishes with ingredients from the lake, whether freshly caught small fish or homegrown vegetables from their backyard gardens. Most dishes focus on freshness and rich, simple flavors without much decoration.
I remember one breakfast there, eating rice with a moderately spicy fish curry alongside fresh vegetables picked from the garden, combined with the smoky aroma from the charcoal stove that added charm to these home-style meals. These meals made me feel the warmth and simplicity of Kachin life.
Lifestyle and Culture of Kachin Girls by the Lake
Besides nature and food, what made me, mr.hotsia, fall in love with Indawgyi was meeting Kachin girls who still firmly preserve their identity. They wear colorful and intricate traditional costumes, strolling by the lake or helping their families with household chores naturally, without over-decoration but full of sincerity.
I spent several times talking with these girls, learning about their lives, dreams, and hopes blending traditional ways with the modern world perfectly. Their friendliness and warm smiles were so charming that I couldn’t help but capture photos and videos as precious memories.
If anyone is interested in the stories of Kachin girls and the lakeside villagers’ lifestyle, I have a video recorded with my own camera from this trip, available to watch atTinsaou #MyanmarGirl #myanmar #Myanmar #Indawgyi #ThaiRed #Shan #IndawgyiLake #KachinStatewhich will help you experience the atmosphere more vividly.
