Garlic Dancing Mandalay: A unique lifestyle and flavor in Mandalay

When talking about Mandalay, a major city in Myanmar, many people think of ancient temples or the famous U Bein Bridge. But for mr.hotsia, this visit to Mandalay was marked by a small but impressive thing called “Garlic Dancing” that made me stop and closely experience the local way of life.

What is “Garlic Dancing”? It’s not a dish or a performance, but a scene of local people in Mandalay selling garlic on the street with lively spirit. I encountered it while walking through Mandalay’s fresh market area, where the hustle and bustle mixed perfectly with the aroma of local spices. I saw garlic vendors lined up with bags full of creamy white garlic. They moved their hands and heads to the rhythm of traditional music playing softly through speakers, making it look like the garlic was “dancing” joyfully to the beat.

I, mr.hotsia, sat down at a nearby coffee shop to observe and taste the unique Burmese coffee. Mandalay coffee is not the fresh brew familiar in Thailand but a packet coffee with a smooth and moderately strong flavor. Sipping coffee while watching the lively market crowd enhanced the feeling of truly being part of Mandalay’s local life.

Markets and Food in Mandalay: A Variety You Must Try

The fresh markets in Mandalay are a must-visit if you want to truly know this city. Besides fresh vegetables and fruits, there are many local foods to taste. I strolled through the market accompanied by the aroma of chicken biryani, pork leg rice, and local snacks sold along the street.

In this area, I also tried famous Burmese breakfast dishes, such as flavorful Burmese noodles served with fresh lime, coriander, and finely sliced long beans, similar to Northern Thai Khao Soi, which I have written about inAmarapura Cuisine, Mandalaynot far away.

While walking through the market, I found that eating street food in Mandalay is not as scary as many think. The food is fresh, cooked hot, and very affordable, just like I described during my trip toMithila Citywhere street curry rice dishes were cheap and delicious enough that I had to return several times.

Lifestyle and Travel in Mandalay

I, mr.hotsia, enjoy observing people’s lives while traveling, and Mandalay did not disappoint. Here you see schoolchildren going to school in clean white uniforms, hardworking vendors selling their goods, and motorcycles constantly passing by.

If you want to explore nearby towns, I recommend using tourist-specific vehicles or buses available on several routes, such as traveling from Mandalay to Bagan (Pagan), where I took a comfortable and affordable OK company bus, as well as horse carriage rides to see flower gardens and the atmosphere of Pyin Oo Lwin city, which I recommended inHorse Carriage Tour in Pyin Oo Lwin City, Pyin Oo Lwin Public Parkwhich is not far from Mandalay.

Traveling within Mandalay itself is also very convenient, with a variety of hotels and accommodations ranging from budget to mid-range. For those wanting to visit Pyin Oo Lwin, I recommend Bravo Hotel, which has a great atmosphere and excellent service. More details can be found atRecommended Hotels in Pyin Oo Lwin

When Simplicity Becomes Charm

For mr.hotsia, Mandalay is not only about temples or beautiful tourist spots but the simplicity of the people’s way of life that made me feel warm and want to return again. The “Garlic Dancing” I saw seemed like a small symbol telling us that even in the ordinary, there is always happiness and fun hidden.

If you want to experience a different perspective of Mandalay, try walking into the fresh market, eating street food, and sipping Burmese coffee. I guarantee you will discover the true essence of this city in a way no travel book can show.

Finally, don’t forget to watch my Garlic Dancing Mandalay clip onYouTubeto see the lively atmosphere of Mandalay market that I mentioned.
