Light meal before the journey: Bus ride from Myitkyina to Mandalay
Traveling from Myitkyina to Mandalay by bus is one of the experiences I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend trying for yourself. Not only do you get to see the daily life of Myanmar people along the way, but stopping for light meals at local eateries adds charm that makes this journey far from boring.
I started at the Myitkyina bus station. This town isn’t very large but is bustling with people and the lively atmosphere of street markets selling a variety of goods including fresh vegetables, fruits, and affordable local food. Before boarding the bus, I chose to have a simple meal of rice topped with two kinds of curry at a small roadside shop in Myitkyina city. It cost about 30 baht but the taste was exceptional—delicious and energizing for the long journey ahead.
The bus from Myitkyina to Mandalay takes about 8 hours. Along the way, the scenery alternates between mountains, rice fields, and rural Myanmar villages. I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy seeing the authentic lifestyle of the people here. It’s not just a destination but an experience that enriches the feeling of travel.
During the trip, the bus stops for breaks to eat local food and use the restroom. I usually try simple snacks sold at roadside stalls such as grilled sticky rice, boiled eggs, or Burmese-style dumplings. These are very cheap and have a simple, homey flavor that I find tastier than fancy city restaurants.
Upon arriving in Mandalay, I, mr.hotsia, never miss the chance to explore the local markets and eateries. Mandalay is the cultural and economic center of northern Myanmar. The food here is diverse and unique, such as Burmese-style noodle soup similar to khao soi served with fresh vegetables and lime, which I have described in my articles.Amarapura city cuisine, MandalayHighly recommended to try
For accommodation in Mandalay, I suggest venturing to the nearby town of Pyin Oo Lwin, which is quieter and has charming places to stay like Bravo Hotel. I stayed there and was very impressed because the owner speaks good English, the service is excellent, and importantly, the breakfast on the hotel’s upper floor offers a 260-degree city view.Recommended hotels in Pyin Oo LwinThis is exactly the spot I love when visiting Myanmar next time
If you have extra time in Pyin Oo Lwin, I recommend taking a horse carriage ride to see the flower gardens and colonial-era houses. This is an activity I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy because it combines nature and culture at the same time.Horse carriage tour in Pyin Oo Lwin, Pyin Oo Lwin public parkAn experience not to be missed
Back in Mandalay, if you want to try authentic local food, I once stopped to taste Burmese noodles along with coffee here. The coffee differs from fresh coffee at home because instant coffee sachets are more popular here. The flavors of food and drinks here give a true sense of being part of the Burmese way of life.
Traveling by bus from Myitkyina to Mandalay is not just a simple city transfer but a journey full of stories, lifestyles, and local flavors that I, mr.hotsia, invite everyone to open their hearts and experience for themselves.
