Two-Hook Fishing at U Bein Bridge, Mandalay
When talking about landmarks you must visit when coming to Mandalay, Myanmar, for me, U Bein’s Bridge is one of the places to immediately note in your travel journal. This bridge is located on Taungthaman Lake in Amarapura city. Here, it’s not just the longest teakwood bridge in the world, stretching over 1.3 kilometers, but also a place full of stories and the lifestyle of the Burmese people that I have never seen anywhere else.
I, mr.hotsia, arrived here early in the morning. The atmosphere as the sun’s rays began to shine through the old wooden structure of the bridge was so beautiful that I had to stop and watch for a long time. While strolling on the bridge, I saw many locals going about their daily activities. One thing that caught my eye was the two-hook fishing along the lakeside.
Two-Hook Fishing Experience at Taungthaman Lake
I followed the locals down into the shallow lake water where you can walk. The locals here use a two-hook fishing method with remarkable skill. The hooks are small, suitable for catching a small fish similar to a mudskipper. I have never seen anyone catch fish this quickly and accurately with this method before. They flick the hooks so swiftly that it’s hard to believe these small fish mouths don’t get cut.
In addition, there is also a net fishing method where locals go out to set nets at dawn. Some use slightly larger hooks to catch medium-sized fish. The variety of fishing methods shows that the locals here still fully rely on this lake for their livelihood.
Lifestyle by U Bein Bridge and Amarapura City
After walking around and photographing the atmosphere by the bridge, I stopped to taste local food in a nearby village, which I have written about in an article.Amarapura City Cuisine, MandalayNot far from U Bein Bridge, the Burmese-style breakfast of Khao Soi noodles with boiled eggs, fresh vegetables, and flavorful side dishes gave me the energy to continue traveling and capturing the atmosphere fully.
Amarapura city itself has an interesting lifestyle. School children pass by energetically, and small roadside markets are full of fresh produce and local foods that I recommend you try to experience.
