Thanaka Myanmar with firsthand experience from mr.hotsia
When talking about “Thanaka,” many might think of the golden yellow powder widely used by Burmese women across the country on their faces. In fact, Thanaka is not just a natural cosmetic but a cultural heritage and way of life for the Burmese people. On my latest trip, I had the chance to experience Thanaka up close in Bagan, Mandalay Region, Myanmar.
The atmosphere I encountered with a kind Bagan woman at the Grand Empire Hotel was truly impressive. She not only applied Thanaka on me but also demonstrated the detailed process of grinding Thanaka from start to finish. Grinding Thanaka involves rubbing the hard Thanaka bark on a stone called the “Thanaka grinding stone,” adding a little water until it forms a smooth pale yellow cream, which is then applied to the face.
I remember the scent of Thanaka was a gentle natural fragrance, unlike the usual perfumes we are familiar with. Once applied, it felt cool and refreshing, like a natural sunscreen protecting the skin from the intense sun and heat of Myanmar. Trying Thanaka myself gave me a deeper understanding of the care and culture in the Burmese way of life.
Thanaka in Hotels and Burmese Way of Life
If you travel to Myanmar, whether Mandalay, Bagan, or Pyin Oo Lwin, you will see that Thanaka is not only sold on street corners or local shops but is also offered in many hotels, including the small and large hotels I stayed at during my trips. Thanaka in hotels is usually placed on the dressing table with a grinding stone, allowing tourists like me to try grinding and applying it themselves. It’s another experience that lets you truly connect with the local lifestyle.
In Mandalay itself, I visited the Thepyi Market and tried local dishes like Burmese noodles and Burmese coffee, which is not as popular for fresh coffee as in our country (read more atMandalay Local Cuisine). Thanaka is like a part of daily life here. Seeing women with Thanaka on their faces walking around markets or streets reminded me of Myanmar’s simple yet charming lifestyle.
Connecting Travel and Culture in Mandalay and Bagan
For those planning to visit Myanmar, traveling from Mandalay to Bagan is convenient. I used the OK company’s bus service, costing about 300 baht per person, taking around 5 hours including a stop to enjoy fried sparrows, a delicious local snack (read travel details atTravel from Mandalay to Bagan)
). Upon arriving in Bagan, what impressed me was the old town atmosphere filled with pagodas and ancient temples. Of course, the highlight was trying traditional Thanaka from the Bagan woman I mentioned earlier. For anyone wanting to experience the authentic Burmese lifestyle beyond horse cart rides or market walks (which I also recommend visitingPyin Oo Lwin), Thanaka is an experience you should not miss.
Thanaka and Burmese Beauty in Daily Life
I recall sitting in a small café in Myitkyina, a town not far from Mandalay, where I saw Burmese women naturally using Thanaka. They didn’t wear much makeup, but Thanaka made their faces look fresh and healthy. It also effectively protected them from the daily sun (read more atMyitkyina Local Cuisine, Myanmar)
). For me, mr.hotsia, trying Thanaka was not just about trying something new but understanding the traditional culture and beauty of Myanmar deeply. We don’t just visit places but truly experience the local people’s way of life.
Summary of Experience and Recommendations
If you come to Myanmar, especially Mandalay and Bagan, I recommend trying the traditional Thanaka experience at least once. Try grinding and applying it yourself and feel the natural coolness proudly presented by the Burmese. Moreover, traveling in Myanmar is full of interesting stories, from local markets and traditional food to horse cart rides around town.Pyin Oo Lwinwhich I recommended on my previous trip
Thanaka may seem like just ordinary golden yellow powder, but for me, mr.hotsia, it is a window into the true lifestyle and heart of Myanmar. For those who love deep travel and cultural immersion, this is an absolute must.
