Traditional Dress of Mon State People 2013: The beauty I, mr.hotsia, witnessed firsthand
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I, mr.hotsia, had to visitMon StateMyanmar in October 2013. The lasting impression to this day is the story of the dress and culture of the Mon people that I experienced up close, especially during my visit toKyaiktiyo Pagodaalso known as the Golden Rock, a sacred site visited by people from all directions to pay respect.
There, I saw Mon women in truly beautiful and distinctive traditional costumes. Their traditional skirts blend Mon, Karen, and Burmese styles harmoniously. These are not only beautiful outfits but also deeply reflect the lifestyle and respect for local culture. I captured these images fearing that such attire might gradually disappear, leaving only the older generation or grandmothers still wearing them.
In my memory, the Mon women's attire while paying respect at the pagoda was impressively elegant and graceful. Their simple yet delicate clothing, some wearing brightly patterned traditional skirts, others draped in intricately handwoven shawls. Their movements and gestures during worship expressed respect and humility. I watched with joy, feeling this journey was more meaningful than ordinary travel.
Culture and Daily Dress of Mon People in Mawlamyine
Afterwards, I traveled to Mawlamyine, an important city in Mon State. Here, I stayed atBreeze Guesthouselocated by the Salween River. The atmosphere here allowed me to truly experience the lifestyle of the Mon and Burmese people.
In Mawlamyine, I found that most locals still maintain the distinctive Mon identity in their dress, especially women who favor traditional skirts and brightly colored local clothing. Although some changes have occurred over time, the cultural roots remain firmly upheld.
I also had the chance to try local food here, especially at Chinese restaurants that blend Mon cuisine perfectly, such as Mawlamyine-style fried chicken with rich flavors and garlic aroma, or shrimp fried rice served with a special local dipping sauce. For those interested in food, I recommend my articlesMawlamyine Local CuisineandRecommended Restaurants in Mawlamyine: Mawlamyine Stir-fried Chickenwhich I wrote to enhance your delicious experience in this city.
Changes and Memories Worth Preserving
From this travel experience, I, mr.hotsia, feel that the traditional dress of the Mon people today is rapidly changing, especially among the younger generation who increasingly prefer modern clothes like shorts or Western-style outfits, which may soon cause the traditional skirts to fade away.
Therefore, I intend to collect these images and stories as a historical record, so future generations can see the beauty and traditional lifestyle of the Mon people during this period of Thai-Myanmar history.
If readers are interested in learning more deeply about the culture and travel in Mon State, I recommend reading about my travel story inMottama City 2013which I documented. Mottama is the old capital of the Mon people with a long history and many ancient temples to explore.
Finally... The Impression of Mon
As I, mr.hotsia, sipped morning coffee on the balcony of Breeze Guesthouse overlooking the flowing Salween River, I thought of the Mon women in beautiful traditional skirts standing respectfully at the Golden Rock Pagoda. That feeling was more than travel; it was a connection to the culture and spirit of people who still cherish and protect their roots.
If you have the chance to visit Mon State in Myanmar, don’t forget to see and learn about the beautiful traditional dress and culture yourself. I believe, like me, it will be a profound and unforgettable experience.
