Taste Burmese Food in Mawlamyine, Mon State: Memories from mr.hotsia

When talking about my journey with mr.hotsia in Mawlamyine, Mon State, Myanmar, one thing that impressed me as much as visiting temples and local lifestyles was tasting the local Burmese food here. Mawlamyine is a city that blends Mon, Burmese, and Chinese cultures harmoniously, making the food colorful and flavorful. I clearly remember staying at The Breeze Guesthouse by the Salween River; just a few hundred meters walk brought me to Chinese and local food restaurants that were very delicious.

One of my favorite restaurants isBONE GYI RESTAURANTThis restaurant is located on the Salween Riverside Road at the corner, about 200 meters walk from The Breeze Guesthouse. I ordered Mawlamyine-style fried chicken with generous garlic. The flavor was mellow and unlike any fried chicken I had before. They have a special dipping sauce that enhances the taste even more. Also, the shrimp fried rice smelled of the wok and fresh shrimp, making my meal truly fulfilling.

Although the restaurant had quite a few flies, they carefully lit candles to keep them away. I think this is part of the charm of Mawlamyine eateries that still preserve their traditional atmosphere well. I bought local fried chicken for 120 baht and shrimp fried rice for 100 baht, which was very worth it considering the deliciousness and ambiance.

Food and Culture of the Mon People in Mawlamyine

Mon food in Mawlamyine is not very distinctive compared to general Burmese cuisine. What I found is that here Chinese restaurants blend perfectly with local Burmese food. There are also Thai restaurants run by Burmese who worked in Thailand, serving stir-fried basil with fried egg that tastes authentic. I once tried half a roasted duck for 150 baht at Paking Restaurant, not far from my accommodation. Most of my lunches were Chinese or Burmese dishes from these places.

Mawlamyine also has riverside restaurants extending over the Salween River with a nice atmosphere, suitable for those wanting to try local food in a relaxing setting, though prices are quite high. So I chose to stroll and taste food from small, friendly shops instead. You can read more about food and recommended restaurants in this city atMawlamyine Food Culture

Life by the Salween River and Local Cuisine

Mawlamyine is located by the Salween River, an important river flowing through the Thailand-Myanmar border and various Myanmar states. Many restaurants use fresh ingredients from the river and sea. Fresh seafood here is a highlight I didn’t want to miss, especially the Hilsa fish, a famous local delicacy. Although I didn’t eat this fish directly in Mawlamyine, I saw the market and the variety of seafood prepared carefully.

During my visit to Mawlamyine, I often woke up early to sip coffee on the balcony of The Breeze Guesthouse, looking out at the gently flowing Salween River along with locals starting their day selling breakfast like bread, boiled eggs, and hot coffee. This atmosphere gave me a deep experience of the true lifestyle of the Mon and Burmese people.

mr.hotsia’s Burmese Food Experience in Mawlamyine

I, mr.hotsia, have visited Mawlamyine several times, and every time it remains one of the destinations I want to return to because the Burmese food here has a unique charm, especially the Mawlamyine fried chicken that I really love.

Besides BONE GYI, I also recommend walking around the morning and night markets in Mawlamyine to try local dishes like Burmese hot pot, chili paste, and snacks that let you fully experience the authentic flavors of Mon State. Don’t forget to try dishes made with fresh ingredients from the Salween River.
