Savor the Flavor of Mon-Style Fried Chicken in Mawlamyine
When talking about Mawlamyine, a small town by the Salween River in Mon State, Myanmar, many might think of the slow-life atmosphere, ancient temples, or the Mon people's lifestyle that remains strongly preserved. But for mr.hotsia, what impressed me most and what I want to share straightforwardly is the “Mon-style fried chicken” or Mawlamyine-style fried chicken that I had the chance to try and fell in love with.
I stayed at The Breeze Guesthouse, which I wholeheartedly recommend for those who want to experience the real life of Mawlamyine. It is located by the Salween River, offering views of local life and boats passing by leisurely. During the days I was writing articles here, I often thought about lunch walks to the riverside road not far away, where there are Chinese and Mon local food restaurants I really like, calledBONE GYI RESTAURANT
This restaurant became my repeated destination. The Mon-style fried chicken here is not ordinary fried chicken. They use crispy fried chicken mixed with fragrant fried garlic and a secret local sauce. The flavor is rich, with the aroma of garlic and the crispy outside yet tender inside chicken making me almost want to dance every time I eat it. Besides the fried chicken, their shrimp fried rice is so delicious I always order it again.
Who would have thought that in Mawlamyine, a town with a mix of Chinese and local cuisine, there would be Mon-style fried chicken with a unique and delicious taste that I must share. Yes, I have detailed directions for those staying at The Breeze Guesthouse: just walk right along the Salween riverside road about 200 meters. The restaurant is right at the street corner, easy to spot and impossible to miss.
Although the restaurant has many flies because it is near a garbage area, they seriously use candles to repel flies, which reflects the lifestyle and environment of Mawlamyine that I experienced without embellishment. I once bought wine here, but it was more expensive than in Laos, so I focused on enjoying the delicious local food first. For those who like Burmese beer or spirits, they have a full selection.
The Rhythm of Life and Mon Food in Mawlamyine
Mawlamyine is a city that perfectly blends Mon, Burmese, and Chinese cultures. What I noticed is that there are more Chinese restaurants here than elsewhere, and some incorporate Mon dishes. I found Mon-style fried chicken unlike any I’ve seen before. There are also Thai restaurants run by Burmese who lived in Thailand, so I didn’t miss ordering stir-fried basil with fried egg for some meals.
My breakfast was mostly simple hotel food like boiled eggs, bread, and coffee. Then I would go out to find food at the market or Chinese restaurants in town, such as a Beijing restaurant where I once had half a roast duck for 150 baht, which I found very good value for quality and quantity.

Mawlamyine: A City of Memories and Simplicity
For me, mr.hotsia, visiting Mawlamyine is not just about sightseeing famous temples or attractions but about living like a local and truly experiencing the atmosphere of this town. As I write this article at The Breeze Guesthouse where I stayed for 6 nights, I can see the wide Salween River flowing through the city and enjoy a peacefulness hard to find in big cities.
I also had the chance to visit Mottama, the old capital of the Mon people, not far from Mawlamyine, by motorcycle taxi at an affordable price, which allowed me to see a different way of life and culture.
If you want a homely atmosphere and outstandingly flavorful food, I recommend visiting Mawlamyine and trying the Mon-style fried chicken atBone Gyi RestaurantI guarantee you will be as hooked as mr.hotsia.
