Ala Hwa Dessert Mawlamyine: A sweet and smooth flavor in the morning market of Mon State

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to arrive in Mawlamyine city, Mon State, Myanmar, a city full of authentic Mon culture blended with typical Burmese lifestyle. To explore the local way of life and food here, I must say “Ala Hwa dessert” is one of the things that impressed me and made me want to share in detail because it is a traditional dessert that clearly reflects the Mon people's way of life with a unique taste.

Mawlamyine morning market is a great starting point to gather stories of this city. The market is located in the large market zone in the city center, just a 10-minute walk from my accommodation, The Breeze Guesthouse. Here you can find fresh markets, daytime markets, and it is also a transfer point to other cities. The morning market atmosphere is lively, with Mon and Burmese people actively selling their goods. I saw fresh vegetables, fruits, large prawns, and traditional local food ready to serve.

Ala Hwa dessert is sold at many stalls in the morning market. This dessert is made from glutinous rice flour mixed with grated coconut and palm sugar. It has a sweet and creamy taste but not greasy. It is eaten with Burmese-style tea, which is sweetened condensed milk mixed until milky white. It is a snack that provides good energy in the morning and represents a local dessert that is hard to find in other cities. I, mr.hotsia, enjoyed eating this dessert in the lively fresh market atmosphere filled with the scent of the Salween River flowing close to the city.

Experience the Mon people's way of life and local flavors

While walking around the market, I noticed that many Mon people here speak the Mon language quite a lot, with many words similar to our Thai language, which made me feel like I was at another home. This market not only has desserts or fruits and vegetables but also Burmese coffee shops serving a milky white drink popular locally. Interestingly, the prawn section is full of large fresh prawns. Although near the Salween River, fish are not as abundant as in Mae Sariang market, possibly because this area is the river's lower reaches before it flows into the sea.

If anyone is interested in full Mon cuisine, I recommend trying a Chinese restaurant in Mawlamyine that offers dishes blended with Mon local flavors, such as Mawlamyine fried chicken and traditional stir-fried chicken, which I have visited before.BONE GYI RESTAURANTThis restaurant is located by the Salween River, just 200 meters from The Breeze Guesthouse. It is a place I want to return to many times because of the rich flavor and fragrant garlic aroma of the Mawlamyine fried chicken, which is truly excellent.

Accommodation and transportation: Getting to know Mawlamyine deeply

I stayed atThe Breeze GuesthouseThis is a small guesthouse located right by the Salween River with a very nice atmosphere, perfect for chilling in the morning and evening. I often woke up early to work on the guesthouse balcony, overlooking the river view and boats passing by. This feeling allowed me to truly absorb the slow-paced atmosphere of Mawlamyine city.

Getting around this city is very convenient. I mainly chose to walk because the attractions and markets are not far apart. If you want to visit nearby towns like Mottama, you can rent a motorcycle with a driver at an affordable price. I had the chance to visitMottama citywhich is the old capital of the Mon people. There is an interesting white pagoda by the Salween River there.

Mawlamyine morning market and Ala Hwa dessert you must try

If you are a foodie like me, mr.hotsia, I recommend waking up early and visiting the Mawlamyine morning market. There you will find not only Ala Hwa dessert but also many Burmese and Mon foods to taste, including sticky rice, grilled prawns, and seasonal fruits. Most importantly, you get to experience the culture and lifestyle of the Mon people up close. I also enjoyed the market atmosphere where locals and tourists meet in a friendly way.
