Explore Mawlamyine, the Mon riverside city along the Salween River with mr.hotsia

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to experience Mawlamyine, an important city in Mon State, Myanmar. This city charms with its history, culture, and riverside local life along the Salween River. I stayed here for six full nights and will share my genuine experiences without holding back.

Starting with accommodation at The Breeze Guesthouse by the Salween River

I chose to stay atThe Breeze GuesthouseThis is a budget guesthouse with excellent service, located right by the Salween River. The view overlooks the gently flowing river. In the mornings, I usually woke up at 6 AM to sip coffee on the front balcony, watching the sunrise over the Kyaikthanlan Pagoda across the river. The atmosphere is peaceful and beautiful. The owner and staff are Mon people who provide friendly service. Currency exchange is conveniently available on-site, and the Wi-Fi is sufficient for checking emails or basic research. Although there were occasional power outages, it never made me feel lacking.

Riverside life along the Salween River and the morning market

Mawlamyine is a city where the Salween River flows, marking parts of the Thailand-Myanmar border. It is the main river sustaining the local community. I enjoyed walking by the river in the mornings and evenings. Locals sit fishing, selling goods, and chatting simply. The morning market in Mawlamyine is vibrant like a big city, offering fresh produce, local food, and spices blending Burmese and Mon cultures perfectly.

For those interested in Mon lifestyle and culture, I recommend visiting the market and tasting local dishes. It is clear that both Mon Burmese and Chinese communities live here harmoniously, enriching Mawlamyine’s food with diverse and intriguing flavors.

Must-try Mawlamyine dishes

Food is another charm I found in Mawlamyine, especially the many Chinese and Mon local restaurants. My favorite isBONE GYI RESTAURANTLocated along the road by the Salween River, just 200 meters from The Breeze Guesthouse. I recommend the Mawlamyine-style stir-fried chicken with lots of garlic, which has a rich and distinct flavor unlike anywhere else. Another highlight is the fragrant shrimp fried rice. The restaurant’s dipping sauce has a unique taste I loved so much I returned several times. Although there were some flies, they used candles to keep them away. Prices are reasonable: local fried chicken about 120 baht, shrimp fried rice 100 baht only.

Additionally, Mawlamyine has delicious Thai restaurants run by Burmese who have lived in Thailand. If you miss Thai basil stir-fry with fried egg, you can find it here too.

Visiting pagodas and temples with legends

If you visit Mawlamyine, don’t miss Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, locally called “Siamese Defeat Pagoda.” I, mr.hotsia, love to sit here watching the sunrise and sunset because the atmosphere is beautiful and it’s the best viewpoint in the city. This area has an interesting old love legend between the Mon and ancient Lanna people. Photography lovers capturing sunsets should not miss this spot.

Nearby is Tu Ja Ma Ra Na Temple, where the nun Ma Mya once lived. I followed this legend and visited the site, which displays old photos of Ma Mya. This experience deepened my connection to the local culture and history.Read about exploring Mawlamyine on your ownto see more atmosphere and additional information

Day trips to nearby Mudon and Mottama

If you have more than two or three days, I recommend renting a motorcycle with a driver to visit Mudon, a Mon community preserving traditional culture, with pagodas and the longest unfinished reclining Buddha of the Mon people. You can also cross the bridge to visit Mottama, which has a white pagoda by the river and a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for those who enjoy historical and nature tourism.Read about Mottama 2013to prepare before your trip

On the way back, don’t forget to stop at Sarphu Island, also called Shampoo Island, which has a sacred spring believed by locals to be protected by a Naga serpent. I tried pouring the water on my head following ancient beliefs and felt refreshed and blessed in an indescribable way.Read more about Shampoo IslandSure

Evening strolls and Mon-style massage

My favorite is walking along the Salween River in the evening. There are Burmese restaurants extending over the water, many simply but nicely decorated. I tried traditional Mon massage at Salween Hotel, which offers a great massage room atmosphere and helped relieve my fatigue a lot. Mawlamyine also has many massage shops to choose from for convenience.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia

Mawlamyine feels like a second home to me. Not only because of the warm stay at The Breeze Guesthouse but also due to the simple lifestyle of the people, the cultural diversity blending Mon, Burmese, and Chinese harmoniously, and the natural beauty and ancient pagodas that left a lasting impression.

If you enjoy deep travel, understanding culture, and a slow pace, Mawlamyine is a great choice to escape the hustle and live slowly like mr.hotsia.
