On Nok Air to Mawlamyine, a small town by the Salween River
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Mawlamyine, Mon State, Myanmar, a city familiar to Thai people from legends and the cross-border love song “Mameya.” Being an old port town by the Salween River, Mawlamyine charms visitors with its lifestyle and a perfectly blended culture.
This time I chose to travel byNok Airwhich flies direct from Bangkok to Mawlamyine Airport, taking about an hour and a half. The Nok Air flight attendants were very attentive and didn’t mind photos. The atmosphere on the plane was relaxed, perfect for those wanting to experience a small town vibe without the bustle of big cities in Myanmar. The journey is convenient and safe, making it a great option for Thais wanting an easy Myanmar trip.
Experience life by the Salween River at The Breeze Guesthouse
I stayed atThe Breeze Guesthouseby the Salween River. It’s a small guesthouse owned by a Mon person, offering warm hospitality like home. The rooms are clean and affordable, plus breakfast is served on the balcony with a beautiful river view. Sipping coffee in the morning here is incredibly relaxing.
The atmosphere in Mawlamyine is quite peaceful, unlike the main tourist cities in Myanmar. I often woke early to walk by the river and nearby fresh markets to observe the simple lifestyle of locals. Vendors sell local goods, fresh food, and seasonal fruits and vegetables, making shopping enjoyable.
Local dishes you must try: Mawlamyine fried chicken and shrimp fried rice
I recommend stopping bya Chinese restaurant in Mawlamyinethat impressed me a lot, which isBONE GYI RESTAURANTlocated on the Salween riverside road, just 200 meters from The Breeze Guesthouse, an easy walk. The restaurant has quite a few flies, but they light candles to keep them away, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The highlight dishes I loved were the “Mawlamyine-style fried chicken,” crispy fried chicken mixed with spices and lots of garlic, with a unique mellow flavor. Another favorite was shrimp fried rice with a fragrant wok aroma. I liked that they provided a special dipping sauce that completed the meal perfectly. Prices were reasonable: fried chicken 120 baht, shrimp fried rice 100 baht, definitely worth it.
Besides that, Mawlamyine also has several Thai restaurants run by Burmese who once lived in Thailand. I tried stir-fried holy basil with fried egg, which had a rich flavor just like home. It’s another memorable experience not to miss when visiting.Mawlamyine City
Strolling the town and following Mon culture
Mawlamyine is not just an ordinary tourist town but is full of fascinating Mon history and culture. I visited Kyaikthanlan Pagoda and U Zina Marana Monastery, where the deep origins of the cross-border love legend lie.
I also had time to relax, work, and write at the guesthouse, stroll through the morning and night markets, and watch people trading and chatting in a mix of Mon and Burmese languages, making me feel I truly experienced real life, not just through movies or books.

Travel tips and advice for travelers
Getting around Mawlamyine is fairly convenient. If you want to visit Mottama town nearby, you can rent a motorcycle taxi round trip for about 100 baht (3 USD). However, I recommend using a trusted driver as the roads and traffic rules here differ from home.
