Mamiya's Home, Mawlamyine: The Legendary Love Story and Riverside Way of Life Along the Salween River
When talking about Mawlamyine city in Mon State, Myanmar, the name “Mamiya” is surely one of the legends familiar to many Thais from the famous cross-border love song that has become an iconic image of this city. For mr.hotsia, visiting Mawlamyine this time was not just an ordinary trip but a journey following the legend and experiencing the real way of life of people along the Salween River that flows through this city continuously.
I am sitting atThe Breeze Guesthousean affordable accommodation with a pleasant atmosphere by the Salween River. Looking out, I see the simple lifestyle of locals that feels like stepping back in time. Old wooden houses, the breeze carrying bird songs and the fresh scent of the river to the shore. This place has become my second home during the 6 days I stayed in Mawlamyine.
Mamiya and the Living Cross-National Love Legend
The story of Mamiya is not just a legend told through songs but also deeply reflects the Mon way of life and culture hidden in this city. I visitedU Zha Marana Monasteryand the Kyaikhtalun Pagoda, believed to be the place where Mamiya and the young man in the legend swore their love. Walking around there, I felt the tranquility and the power of love still lingering in the air.
Mawlamyine is culturally diverse, with Mon people blending harmoniously with Burmese and Chinese communities. I spoke with restaurant owners who are Mon and Burmese, who shared the city's history and its close ties with Thailand. The Salween River flowing through this city is like a major artery nourishing the lives here and connecting history with Thailand and Kayin State in the past.
Taste Mon and Chinese Food by the Salween River
Anyone visiting Mawlamyine who doesn't try the local food is seriously missing out. I was particularly impressed by a small Chinese restaurant located by the river on Salween Riverside Road calledBONE GYI RESTAURANTa place I returned to several times, especially for their “Mawlamyine-style Stir-fried Chicken” which has a unique aroma of garlic and local spices. They also serve spicy and rich shrimp fried rice that I had to order an extra plate of.
Although the restaurant has quite a few flies, the riverside atmosphere and the warmth of the owner more than make up for it. I enjoyed eating while watching the Salween River view, sensing the perfect blend of Mon and Chinese influences in the dishes. If you want to know the true taste of Mawlamyine, I highly recommend trying it yourself.
Besides Chinese food, Mawlamyine also has many traditional Burmese and Mon restaurants. Some are run by owners who once lived in Thailand and serve Thai dishes like stir-fried basil with fried egg, which is very delicious and popular among tourists and locals alike. For those interested in food, read about Mawlamyine's local cuisinethat I have written to get a clearer picture of how diverse and charming the food here is.
Stroll Through the Market and Riverside Life
Mawlamyine is not only famous for its legend and food but also has a lively and colorful local riverside market. I walked through the morning market and saw vendors lined up selling fresh local products including vegetables, fruits, and dried goods that are rare in big cities. Locals buy and sell with friendly exchanges.
The atmosphere by the Salween River in the morning is especially lively with fishing boats and cargo boats coming and going. Some locals go fishing in traditional ways. I had the chance to talk with local fishermen who told me about the Hilsa fish, an important fish in this area and popular among Burmese and Bangladeshis alike.
Travel Tips and Personal Experience
For traveling to Mawlamyine, I recommend staying atThe Breeze Guesthousebecause besides being affordable, the service and river views help you truly experience the city's atmosphere. The owner is a kind Mon person ready to assist with various travel needs, including trips to Mon Island not far from the city.
If you want to visit Mottama, the old capital of the Mon people, you can rent a motorcycle with a driver at a reasonable price. I have been there and recommend hiring a driver for safety because the roads and traffic here may not be suitable for novice tourists. Read more atMottama 2013
I visited in October when the weather was not too hot, perfect for walking around the city and sipping morning coffee by the Salween River in a relaxed way. Every morning I woke early to work and write about my journey on the guesthouse balcony, watching boats pass by and people starting their day. It was an indescribable feeling but made me realize this trip meant more than just tourism.
