Mameya, Mawlamyine City, Mon State, Myanmar: Travel experience with mr.hotsia
When talking about Mawlamyine city in Mon State, Myanmar, the name “Mameya” is one of the stories I, mr.hotsia, have intentionally sought and experienced myself. This time, I spent a long stay of 6 nights in this city, choosing to stay atThe Breeze guesthousewhich is located by the Salween River. The atmosphere here is very nice. Just waking up in the morning to sip coffee while enjoying the river view makes you feel truly relaxed.
Mawlamyine is not just a city I passed through in Myanmar; it is a city full of traditional Mon culture. The essence of Mon and Burmese coexist harmoniously here. There are ancient temples and historical sites linked to the cross-national love legend of Mameya, well known to many Thais. I followed those memories from Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, which tells the love story, to U Zina Marana Temple, which I visited myself. Read more aboutTraveling Mawlamyine on your own
The charm of Mawlamyine and local cuisine
Speaking of food in Mawlamyine, I, mr.hotsia, must say it is a highlight not to be missed because here Chinese and Mon local cuisines blend interestingly. One restaurant I really liked isBONE GYI RESTAURANTlocated on the road along the Salween River, just a 200-meter walk from the guesthouse. This restaurant serves local Mawlamyine fried chicken with lots of garlic, a unique flavor, and shrimp fried rice that I ordered so often it almost became my regular dish.
Eating here is a simple experience but full of flavors that satisfy. I usually order local fried chicken with plain rice for an afternoon meal before returning to Thailand. Prices are reasonable: fried chicken about 120 baht, shrimp fried rice 100 baht. Although the restaurant has some flies due to trash nearby, they light candles to keep flies away. I consider this a detail showing good customer care. For those interested in food in this city, read more atRecommended restaurants in Mawlamyine: Mawlamyine fried chickenandMawlamyine local cuisine
Life by the Salween River and traveling in the city
Mawlamyine is located by the Salween River, which flows as part of the Thailand-Myanmar border in some sections and is an important waterway connecting Kayin State and Mottama city. I, mr.hotsia, spent hours watching this river from the front of The Breeze guesthouse, reflecting on the history and relationships of the communities on both sides of the river.
Traveling in this city is convenient and uncomplicated. I recommend renting a motorcycle taxi for a round trip to nearby Mottama city, which you can reach by crossing the bridge from Mawlamyine—no need to take a boat as before. The price is about 3 US dollars or 100 baht. Although Mottama has changed a lot and has a more modern feel, there is still a white pagoda by the Salween River worth visiting.

Accommodation and atmosphere in Mawlamyine
The Breeze guesthouse where I stayed is my favorite accommodation in Mawlamyine because it is riverside on the Salween River, peaceful, and has friendly staff who take care warmly like home. I enjoyed working in the morning on the guesthouse balcony, watching local life and small boats passing by.
Room rates are reasonable, about 7,000 kyat per night (around 150 baht), with breakfast served on the balcony with a beautiful river view. Although the internet is slow and power outages are frequent, for me, the atmosphere here made me forget these issues. Read the full review atBreeze Guesthouse
Mon culture and community in Mawlamyine
Mawlamyine is a city where Mon and Burmese people blend harmoniously. I, mr.hotsia, experienced the lifestyle and culture of the people here closely, especially the story of “Mameya,” an important love legend and cultural heritage of the Mon people.
In this city, there are also interesting Burmese dance performances, which I watched and talked with locals in a friendly manner. If you are interested in local culture and want to see the real life of Mon people in Myanmar, I recommend walking around the local market and chatting with community members for a different experience than just passing through.
