Rup Mamiya, Mawlamyine City, Mon State, Myanmar

I am mr.hotsia, just arrived in Mawlamyine, Mon State, Myanmar, a city sharing its name with the famous song “Mamiya” familiar to Thai people. The cross-border love story from Lanna legends and the beautiful song inspired me to seek the “Rup Mamiya” of Mawlamyine myself. This journey is not just tourism but an experience of the traditional lifestyle blended with the diverse culture of the Mon people in this state.

Mawlamyine is located by the Salween River, a large river flowing through the Thailand-Myanmar border and emptying into the sea here. I chose to stay atThe Breeze Guesthousewhich is riverside with a fresh morning atmosphere. You can see the Salween River flowing gently and hear birdsong adding to the peacefulness of this quiet town. Though not very large, its charm lies in the lifestyle of its people and the living history.

Searching for “Rup Mamiya” in Mawlamyine

“Rup Mamiya” to me means the images and stories reflecting the love and bond of the Mon people with this city. I started at Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, one of the important places related to the love legend of Mamiya and the prince of Mawlamyine. This pagoda is on a hill with clear views of the city and the Salween River. I walked around the pagoda which still preserves traditional Mon art impressively.

Then I continued to Tozamarana Pagoda, a historically significant temple and former nunnery. Seeing the lifestyle of monks and villagers here made me feel like traveling back in time to old Mawlamyine.

Local Food and Atmosphere in Mawlamyine

Speaking of food here, I recommend trying local dishes blended with Chinese and Burmese flavors, reflecting the community’s diversity. Especially the “BONE GYI RESTAURANT” I found while walking along the Salween River. It’s not far from my accommodation, just a right turn and about 200 meters walk to the corner of the street.

The standout dish I liked was “Mawlamyine-style fried chicken” with lots of garlic, a rich flavor unlike anywhere else, and also “shrimp fried rice” fragrant with Chinese spices combined perfectly with local taste. Although the restaurant had many flies due to proximity to a trash spot, they lit candles to keep flies away, maintaining a decent atmosphere. Prices are affordable: fried chicken about 120 baht, shrimp fried rice 100 baht. I had lunch here several times and it became my favorite spot in town.Read more about recommended restaurants in Mawlamyine

For those wanting to taste a variety of foods, along the Salween River there are many Chinese and local Burmese restaurants. Interestingly, there are also Thai restaurants run by Burmese who previously lived in Thailand, with flavors that do not disappoint.Read more about Mawlamyine cuisine

Lifestyle and Travel in Mawlamyine

Mawlamyine is not only about history and delicious food but also full of the simple lifestyle of villagers. I strolled through the local market with fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and various spices. This market made me feel truly close to the Mon and Burmese people.

If you want to fully enjoy this city, I recommend staying at The Breeze Guesthouse, where I stayed for 6 nights. It’s affordable, riverside on the Salween, with excellent service like a second home in Mawlamyine, and a great starting point for visiting important places in town.Read more about The Breeze Guesthouse

Traveling to nearby towns like Mottama is easy by motorcycle taxi across the bridge for about 3 USD or 100 baht, but I recommend hiring a round trip car to reduce risk and hassle.Read more about Mottama town
