Rup Myae, Mawlamyine City, Mon State, Myanmar: Following the cross-national love legend

I, Mr.Hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to Mawlamyine City, Mon State, Myanmar. This is a small town by the Salween River that has long been historically and culturally significant to the Mon people. In the past, this city was the administrative center and the birthplace of the cross-national love legend “Rup Myae,” well known to Thai people from famous songs and Lanna literature.

I sat atThe Breeze Guesthousewhich is my favorite accommodation where I stayed for 6 nights. With a peaceful atmosphere by the Salween River, the morning river view where I woke up to write is an unforgettable image. The owner is a genuine Mon person who warmly takes care of guests, offers friendly currency exchange rates, and serves breakfast on the balcony overlooking the flowing river clearly.

The journey to find “Rup Myae” and the legend of Mawlamyine

As a traveler who enjoys following legends and folk tales, I started exploring Mawlamyine by visiting Kyaikthanlan Pagoda, which is said to be the place where Rup Myae and the prince swore their love. Then I walked down toU Zha Marana Monasterywhich is connected to the culture and monastic ordination traditions of the past. This journey gave me a feeling of truly experiencing the roots of Mon people's way of life.

Mawlamyine is not only rich in history and antiquity but also vibrant with a community that still preserves Mon culture well. I strolled through the local market that offered both traditional food and everyday items reflecting a simple and sincere lifestyle.

Local food and flavors of Mawlamyine

The food in Mawlamyine was another impressive experience for me, especially the Chinese restaurants that perfectly blend Mon ingredients and flavors. My favorite restaurant isBONE GYI RESTAURANTlocated not far from my accommodation. This restaurant features signature dishes like Mawlamyine-style fried chicken with plenty of fragrant fried garlic and shrimp fried rice with a balanced taste accompanied by a special dipping sauce that remarkably enhances the flavor.

Although the restaurant had many flies due to nearby garbage, the owner attentively lit candles to keep flies away for customers, maintaining a pleasant dining atmosphere. I even returned twice during my stay because I loved the unique taste and simplicity of the local food.

Additionally, Mawlamyine has Thai restaurants run by Burmese people who previously lived in Thailand, allowing me to taste authentic Thai-style stir-fried basil with fried egg in this city without feeling homesick. The guesthouse breakfast was simple but satisfying, with boiled eggs, bread, and coffee that energized me for the whole day’s journey.

Mon lifestyle and community in Mawlamyine

The Mon people here still clearly maintain their identity through language, clothing, and traditions. I saw community members going about their daily routines, such as selling goods at the market, cooking, and living by the Salween River, which is the city’s lifeline.

The Salween River here is not just an ordinary river but an important transportation and trade route connecting Mawlamyine with other areas in Mon State and the Thai-Myanmar border. I felt the warmth of the people who were ready to help and greeted travelers with friendly smiles.

Trip across to Mottama City and Sarphum Island

If you visit Mawlamyine, don’t miss riding a motorcycle across the bridge to visit Mottama City, the old capital of the Mon people. Here stands a white pagoda by the Salween River, a beautiful viewpoint and photo spot. For those who love nature and a small island atmosphere, I recommend stopping bySarphum Islandor locally called “Shampoo Island.” This island is perfect for relaxing and enjoying a peaceful river view.

The round trip to Mottama City and Sarphum Island is inexpensive, takes a short time, and offers a different perspective on Mon life. I chose to rent a motorcycle with a local driver for safety and convenience.

Mawlamyine’s image through Mr.Hotsia’s eyes

Mawlamyine is a small city full of memories and interesting stories. I, Mr.Hotsia, felt like I traveled back in time to closely experience the traditional Mon way of life. This place doesn’t have the full-scale tourist attractions of big cities but has a simple, kind, and warm charm.

If you enjoy cultural travel and want to experience the sincerity of the people, Mawlamyine is a destination not to be overlooked. And if you want to deeply know the story ofRup MyaeI recommend visiting here for at least 3-4 nights to have enough time to explore and fully absorb the atmosphere.
