The Film Leads to Mameeya Malameng

I, mr.hotsia, start this story from the heart of Malameng city, Mon State, Myanmar, a city well known to many Thais from the long-standing Mon-Lanna love legend and the once-famous song “Mameeya.” I traveled here out of curiosity, wanting to see and experience the real lifestyle of the Mon people in this city where the Salween River flows before reaching the vast sea.

Malameng is not just an ancient city with history but also a vibrant city, especially in terms of food. I, mr.hotsia, must say it offers a variety of dishes with bold flavors that rival anywhere else, as I experienced ata Chinese restaurant in Malamenglocated along the Salween River near The Breeze Guest House, where I stayed for several nights. This restaurant stands out with its local Malameng-style stir-fried chicken, which I call “Malameng fried chicken,” with a strong aroma of garlic and spices that left a lasting impression on me, along with shrimp fried rice blending Chinese and Mon flavors perfectly.

Although the restaurant’s riverside location naturally attracts many flies, the owner manages this by lighting candles to repel them, so the food’s deliciousness remains unaffected. The restaurant also offers drinks like wine and Myanmar beer. Though I didn’t order due to budget limits, I believe those who enjoy trying new things will appreciate it.

Getting around Malameng is convenient for those who enjoy walking to explore the city because the riverside roads and small alleys are filled with local and Chinese restaurants mixed together. Here, Burmese and Mon people live side by side, and there are Thai restaurants run by Burmese who once lived in Thailand. I even had stir-fried basil with fried egg in Malameng, which was quite surprising.

In the mornings, I usually start my day with a light breakfast at The Breeze Guest House where I stayed. I highly recommend this accommodation because it is right by the Salween River. The riverside morning view is beautiful and the atmosphere is peaceful, perfect for relaxing or working as I did.The Breeze Guest HouseThey also provide currency exchange services and friendly staff, making me feel like I had a second home in this city.

After recharging in the morning, I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking around the city to explore local life and the many temples in Malameng, such as the Kyaikhtalun Pagoda, which has a Mon-Lanna love legend, and the nearby Tuja Marana Temple, where I experienced a unique peacefulness unlike anywhere else.

Additionally, Malameng is close to Mottama, the old capital city of the original Mon people. I have written about this in an articleMottama City 2013describing how traveling from Malameng to Mottama is easy with affordable motorcycle taxi services for round trips. I recommend hiring a driver rather than riding yourself for safety and peace of mind, which are important for travelers like me.

This trip also broadened my cultural perspective on the harmonious blend of Burmese and Mon cultures. I witnessed Burmese dance performances, which are charming and culturally profound. If you are interested in Burmese dance, I have an experience article hereBurmese Dancewhich will help deepen your understanding.

For anyone planning to visit Malameng, I recommend spending at least 4-5 days here to fully absorb the lifestyle and local flavors, whether Chinese, Burmese, or traditional Mon cuisine, especially the Malameng fried chicken dish that I still fondly remember.

If you enjoy market atmospheres and late-night food, I have written about it in an articleMalameng Night Food Stallswhich will let you fully experience the city’s vibrant nightlife.

Ultimately, I, mr.hotsia, want Malameng to be one of your chosen destinations to open new experiences because this city is not just old but alive, rich in culture, and full of stories waiting for you to discover as I did on my journey.
