Ye Mawlamyine Myanmae Food City of Ye, Mon State, Myanmar: Flavors from the Mon land experienced by mr.hotsia
When talking about traveling in Mon State, Myanmar, this name is not new for those who love exploring culture and local food. “Ye Mawlamyine,” or simply called “City of Ye” by Thai people, is the city where I, mr.hotsia, spent many nights exploring and fully tasting the local dishes here. I must say the atmosphere and flavors in this city are unlike any other place in Myanmar.
I started in Mawlamyine, the important center of Mon State, strolling along the beautiful and peaceful Salween River flowing through the city. I stayed atThe Breeze GuesthouseThis is a small guesthouse by the Salween River with a great atmosphere and warm Mon staff taking care of guests. It felt like my second home during my stay here.
The food in City of Ye is a harmonious blend of Burmese, Mon, and Chinese flavors, especially the local dishes I found ata Chinese restaurant in Mawlamyineby the Salween River. What impressed me most was the “Mawlamyine-style stir-fried chicken,” or what this restaurant calls Mawlamyine fried chicken, seasoned with garlic and spices to create a unique taste. There was also fragrant shrimp fried rice served with the restaurant’s special dipping sauce.
The dining atmosphere here is unlike big city restaurants. Although there were some flies, the owner cleverly solved this by lighting candles to keep them away, allowing me to eat comfortably. The food prices were very reasonable: local fried chicken about 120 baht, shrimp fried rice 100 baht, which is great value for the taste and atmosphere.
Besides this restaurant, Mawlamyine also has Thai restaurants run by Burmese who once lived in Thailand, allowing me to taste authentic Thai stir-fried holy basil with fried egg, a dish hard to find in Myanmar. For authentic Mon food, you should explore local markets and some local eateries offering a variety of traditional chili pastes and side dishes.
Mon food in this city may not have many dedicated authentic Mon restaurants, but there are places that use Mon ingredients and flavors blended perfectly with Chinese and Burmese cuisine. I once had half a roast duck at a Chinese restaurant calledPaking Restaurantwhich was affordable and very tasty. It’s another dish you shouldn’t miss when visiting Mawlamyine.
Food and Lifestyle Reflecting Mon Culture in Mawlamyine
Eating in Mawlamyine is not just about taste but also reflects the culture and lifestyle of the Mon people here. I, mr.hotsia, saw that locals still live simply but warmly, sharing Mon heritage through various dishes such as chili paste made from fresh chilies and local spices, or snacks often made from river seafood from the Salween River.
In the morning, I usually start the day with a light breakfast at the guesthouse like boiled eggs, bread, and coffee while enjoying the peaceful view of the Salween River, a scene not easily found in big cities I have visited.
Mawlamyine also has a small Chinatown with various Chinese food shops, making it a place where Chinese, Burmese, and Mon cuisines blend perfectly. I have written restaurant recommendations for Chinese and local food in Mawlamyine inRecommended Restaurants in Mawlamyine articlewhich I recommend for those who want to follow my footsteps.
Unique Travel and Experiences in Mon State
Visiting Mawlamyine and City of Ye in Mon State for me, mr.hotsia, is not just about eating but truly experiencing the lifestyle of the Mon people living here. Whenever I walk through markets or along the Salween River, I see locals living simply, trading fresh seafood, forest products, and local goods at affordable prices.
If anyone is interested in traveling in Mon State, I recommend visiting Mottama, the old capital of the Mon people, which is not far by motorcycle from Mawlamyine. There you can see a beautiful white pagoda by the Salween River and experience the local lifestyle that has changed somewhat over time. More details can be found inMottama 2013 articleby me.
Additionally, Mawlamyine has late-night eateries open until late, perfect for those who like to eat at night. I have tried various dishes atMawlamyine Late-Night Restaurantwhich offers both local and simple Chinese dishes in a chill street-side atmosphere.
