Ancient Temple Kengtung: The Beauty of Tai Yai Culture in Shan State

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today I want to share my travel experience toKengtunga small town in Shan State, Myanmar, full of charm and incredible cultural depth, especiallyAncient Temple Kengtungor as locals proudly call it, Ancient Temple Kengtung, which I had the chance to experience myself and would like to invite everyone to join this journey through my story.

History of Kengtung and Tai Yai Lifestyle

Kengtung is located in Shan State, home to the Tai Yai people who have their own unique language and culture, distinct from the general Burmese population. Although small, this town is rich in history and artistic beauty. The ancient temples here are a key attraction that made me, mr.hotsia, return many times. On my latest trip, I traveled through Tachileik, the main gateway to Kengtung, where you can obtain a visa at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok or use a special pass for Thai travelers seeking short visits as detailed inmy previously written travel details to Kengtung.Travel Details to Kengtung

Arrival in Kengtung: A Colorful Adventure

I, mr.hotsia, started my journey from Mong Yawng, not far away. The car trip through winding mountain roads took about 3 hours, with views changing by season and glimpses of local life along the way. I was excited by the simplicity and warmth of the people. Despite being a border town, Kengtung is surprisingly safe and friendly.

Ancient Temple Kengtung: A Temple That Tells Stories Through Time

Upon arriving in Kengtung, my main destination was the ancient temple located in the town center. This temple features architecture blending Tai Yai art and Burmese Buddhist art harmoniously. The temple looks old but remains beautiful and peaceful, with intricately carved pagodas and Buddha statues. I, mr.hotsia, spent time sitting in the shade, offering alms to monks in the morning, and walking around to admire murals depicting the history of the Tai Yai people and Kengtung.

The atmosphere inside the temple is quiet, with soft bell sounds and the scent of incense filling the air. I felt the faith and strong connection the locals have with this place, which serves as both a spiritual and cultural center for the community.

If anyone is interested in watching real footage of the atmosphere here, you can view it atAncient Temple Kengtungwhich I, mr.hotsia, personally recorded.

Lifestyle and Local Market in Kengtung

Besides the ancient temple, Kengtung has a lively morning fresh market. I strolled with locals, feeling like I traveled back in time to a simple rural atmosphere. Vendors sold fresh produce, local fruits, spices, and handwoven fabrics. I, mr.hotsia, enjoyed tasting local dishes like sticky rice with grilled chicken and chili paste at a small roadside stall, which was flavorful and well-balanced.

Talking with locals here helped me understand the Tai Yai way of life better. They still firmly preserve their customs and language, despite the many changes in the outside world.

Connection to Hakha: Another Capital City of Shan State

If you plan to visit Shan State and want to explore ethnic diversity and nature, I, mr.hotsia, recommend stopping byHakhawhich is not far from Kengtung. Hakha is a highland town with cool weather year-round and beautiful mountain views comparable to anywhere in Myanmar. I have written detailed articles before, especially about the Chin people with their unique culture and interesting traditions.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

For me, mr.hotsia, visiting the ancient temple in Kengtung was not just sightseeing but experiencing a living, profound culture today. The temple’s tranquility and reverence allowed me to pause from the city’s hustle, meet friendly people, and savor delicious local food.

Kengtung and Shan State have many more stories waiting to be discovered. If you have the chance, I encourage you to experience it yourself. You will realize that this “beauty” is not just photos or stories but a true journey experience.
