Kalaw Shan State Myanmar: A small town hiding the charm of nature and culture
When talking about Shan State in Myanmar, many people might think of Kengtung or Mong Yang, which I have previously shared aboutTraveling to KengtungandMong Yang, MyanmarBut for me, mr.hotsia, experiencing Kalaw is a profound and impressive experience as well. Kalaw is a small town located in southern Shan State, situated at a considerable elevation above sea level, making the weather cool and pleasant all year round. It is perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities and experience the traditional lifestyle of the Tai Yai and indigenous Shan people.
Getting to Kalaw
For travelers like me, arriving in Kalaw is not too difficult but still somewhat challenging, especially when traveling from Mandalay. Flying directly to Kale-Kalaymyo is the most convenient option, as I have shared before inTraveling to HakhaThen take a bus or taxi to Kalaw, which is about 3-4 hours away on a winding mountain road. But if you have time and a love for adventure, taking the train from Mandalay to Kalaw is an experience not to be missed because the railway passes through beautiful natural scenery alternating with Tai Yai and Tai Lue villages that still preserve their traditional lifestyles.
Atmosphere and Charm of Kalaw
When stepping into Kalaw, the first thing I, mr.hotsia, feel is the peaceful and friendly atmosphere. The people here still live simply. There is a fresh market full of local produce, vegetables, fruits, and local foods that are hard to find in big cities. I enjoy walking around the morning market because not only do I get to experience Tai Yai culture, but I also get to eat a local breakfast such as sticky rice with grilled pork and hot soy milk at small roadside stalls.
Kalaw is also famous as a starting point for trekking to nearby hill tribe villages, which is an experience I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend. The trekking routes through the Shan mountain ranges take you through lush forests, Pa-O, Tai Yai villages, and offer close encounters with traditional lifestyles.
Local Lifestyle and Culture
I have had the opportunity to talk with locals here. Many still wear traditional Tai Yai costumes. Sometimes you can hear traditional music or see interesting tribal ceremonies. I found that the relationship between the Tai Yai and Chin people in Shan State is close and deeply intertwined, similar to what I have experienced inHakhawhere the Chin and Tai Yai people share roots and connected histories.
Additionally, Kalaw has old temples worth visiting, especially those located on small hills that offer panoramic views of the town, perfect for resting or photographing sunsets. I, mr.hotsia, often recommend fellow travelers to stop by before continuing to other towns in Shan State such as Kengtung or Hakha.
Local Food of Kalaw
For those who love local cuisine, Kalaw has many interesting local restaurants. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy trying sticky rice with Tai Yai spiced chicken curry, as well as local chili dips and fresh vegetables grown locally. Burmese-style papaya salad, called “Tam Kway” by the Tai Yai, has a spicy flavor different from ours. There are also local desserts and fragrant roasted tea, perfect for relaxing after exploring the town.
Recommended Accommodation and Transportation in Kalaw
Accommodation in Kalaw ranges from budget guesthouses to small hotels with good service. I, mr.hotsia, recommend choosing places near the town center for convenience in traveling and accessing markets or restaurants. Most transportation within Kalaw is by walking or renting bicycles to enjoy the town’s atmosphere. For trips outside town, renting a car or hiring a local guide is easy.
Connecting Travel to Nearby Towns in Shan State
Kalaw is a good starting point for traveling to other important towns in Shan State such as Kengtung, which I have recommended before inTraveling to Kengtungor Hakha, which is beautiful and has an interesting lifestyle.HakhaSuitable for those who love peace and nature. You can also plan to visit the Jaitalan Pagoda in Mawlamyine.Jaitalan Pagoda / Jaitalan Templewhich is a beautiful sunset viewpoint with interesting historical stories.
