Experience the aroma of Kengtung fresh coffee with mr.hotsia
When talking about Myanmar coffee, many might think of Mandalay or Yangon coffee, but for me, mr.hotsia, “Kengtung fresh coffee” in Shan State has a charm and deeper stories than you might expect.
Kengtung is an important city in eastern Shan State, located near the Thailand-Myanmar-Laos border. It is a city with a rich history and culture of the Tai Yai people blended with various ethnic communities, along with nature and a lifestyle that fully preserves the unique identity of the Tai Yai.
My journey started by flying into Tachileik and then taking a car to Kengtung. On this route, I learned frommy own travel article to Kengtungthat traveling in this area is more convenient and safer than expected. Also, the locals speak Thai, which makes communication smooth and makes me feel like traveling in a warm neighboring land.
Kengtung and the Secret of Fresh Coffee
Kengtung is not only known for its beautiful nature and Tai Yai culture but also as a famous coffee growing area in Shan State. The high altitude and cool climate year-round give the coffee here a special taste, with a delicate aroma and rich flavor rarely found elsewhere. I had the chance to talk with local coffee farmers and fresh coffee shop owners in Kengtung. They shared about the cultivation, harvesting, and roasting processes that preserve the best quality of the coffee beans.
One memorable experience was sitting and sipping Kengtung fresh coffee in a small roadside shop in the city center. The scent of freshly roasted coffee filled the air along with the peaceful atmosphere of a small town where people still live simply. While sipping coffee and chatting with the shop owner, I learned that most coffee beans here are grown by small-scale organic farmers and delivered directly to the shop without middlemen. That’s why Kengtung fresh coffee has a pure and unique charm.
Lifestyle and Coffee Market in Kengtung
At Kengtung’s fresh market, I saw fresh coffee beans sold by the kilogram from early morning. The locals shopped enthusiastically. There were also traditional coffee roasters lined up frequently, a rare sight in big cities where coffee has become a finished product.
The market here is not only about coffee but also a hub for local ingredients and traditional foods worth tasting, such as Tai Yai sticky rice, Kengtung-style grilled pork, and local vegetables hard to find in Thailand. I recommend strolling the market in the morning and finding a chance to sit and enjoy a warm cup of fresh coffee to truly absorb the local life atmosphere.
Connecting Experiences with Travel in Shan State
After spending several days in Kengtung, I had the opportunity to visit Hakha city, located in Chin State not far away. Details about traveling to Hakha can be found inmy travel article to Hakha citywhich helps provide a better overview of traveling in this region.
Hakha city differs from Kengtung as it is situated at a higher altitude and has a distinctive Chin culture. However, one thing they share is the chance to experience a lifestyle close to nature and traditional culture. This made my journey in Shan State full of diversity and memorable colors.
Perspective from mr.hotsia
For me, mr.hotsia, tasting Kengtung fresh coffee is not just about flavor but about experiencing the stories of the people, lifestyle, and landscape that create this quality coffee. Every time I sip Kengtung coffee, I think of the farmers who carefully cultivate the coffee and the peacefulness of the small town combined with the warmth of the locals.
If you are looking for a unique coffee experience and want to taste coffee with stories told through its flavor and aroma, I recommend coming to Kengtung. Explore the market, try local food, and sip fresh coffee from the farms here. You will feel the specialness that Kengtung fresh coffee offers beyond anywhere else.
