Motorcycle touring the countryside outside Kengtung city with firsthand experience from mr.hotsia

Kengtung, a small town in Shan State in eastern Myanmar, is one of the destinations I, mr.hotsia, truly love and want to recommend to everyone. Especially riding a motorcycle to explore the countryside outside Kengtung. This place is not only a town with a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful nature but also full of the Tai Yai and local ethnic lifestyles that I believe many have never known before.

Upon arriving in Kengtung, the first thing to do is to arrange transportation and accommodation because to conveniently ride a motorcycle in the countryside, you need to be well-prepared. The weather here changes quickly; mornings and evenings can be cool to cold, so bring warm clothes.

Renting a motorcycle in Kengtung is easy with many shops to choose from, offering reasonable prices and well-maintained bikes. Before setting off, I chose a quiet rural route passing small villages that still firmly preserve traditional ways of life. I saw locals planting rice, farming, and raising animals simply. Most villagers speak the Tai Yai local language, but when they met me speaking some Thai, they smiled and greeted me warmly, making me feel like returning to an old home.

Besides nature and lifestyle, cultural diversity is another charm I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy. For example, visiting ancient temples and pagodas in Kengtung city, which are unique compared to other places in Myanmar. During my visit, I stopped by the Jaitalan Pagoda, which has a long-standing legend.Jaitalan Pagoda / Jaitalan TempleLocated on a hill in the middle of town, it offers views of the city and green rice fields. It is a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise and sunset. Standing there watching the sun dip below the horizon with the cool breeze reminded me of the story of Mameya and Su Khasem who pledged their love here. It was a truly warm and profound feeling.

Motorcycle Routes and Countryside Around Kengtung

The routes I chose around Kengtung are not main roads but dirt roads and rural paths connecting various villages, many of which are rarely visited by tourists. I stopped to talk with several groups of locals, learning about their simple yet warm and friendly way of life.

Along the way, I stopped at a small village fresh market offering a variety of fresh produce, including vegetables, fruits, and homemade local foods. Grandmothers and villagers worked hard selling goods. When they saw me as a tourist, they invited me to chat and recommended local Tai Yai dishes like spicy yet balanced Tai Yai papaya salad. It was another experience I, mr.hotsia, don’t want you to miss.

I also had the chance to try many local dishes such as Shan-style chicken biryani, rice noodles with pork blood soup, and strong-flavored homemade shrimp paste chili dip. These not only replenished my energy but also made me feel truly connected to the local culture.

Traveling to Kengtung and Connecting with Nearby Towns

If you want to extend your route to nearby towns like Mong Yawn, which also has Tai Yai nature and culture, I recommend the articleMong Yawn, Myanmarwhich I have visited and documented in detail, including travel and atmosphere there.
