Travel to Kengtung Countryside: The Charm of Shan State, a Small Town Full of Stories
Kengtung, locally called “Kengtung,” is a small town in Shan State of Myanmar, filled with a simple rural lifestyle deeply enriched by the blended cultures of the Tai Yai and Shan people. For me, Mr. Hotsia, visiting Kengtung felt like stepping back into a slower time, walking through countryside villages surrounded by mountains and lush green fields. The experience of the local way of life here is completely different from big cities in Myanmar like Mandalay or Yangon.
Reaching Kengtung is not as difficult as one might think. Although it is far from Myanmar’s main hubs, I chose to travel from Tachileik via a winding land route with some sections of road still underdeveloped. However, the scenery of fields and mountains along the way made every hour on the road worthwhile. For those interested in full travel details, you can readTraveling to Kengtungwhich I have written in detail.
Countryside Villages and Their Still Beautiful Way of Life
Kengtung is not just a small town but also a gateway to surrounding rural villages, home to Tai Yai and Shan people who have firmly preserved their traditional customs. I had the chance to visit small villages where locals still live close to nature, growing rice, raising animals, and handcrafting baskets. The warmth of the people here made me feel like part of the community.
Every morning, small fresh markets buzz with people buying and selling fresh food, vegetables, fruits, and daily necessities. I strolled through tasting local foods like sticky rice, chili paste, and sweets made from local ingredients such as coconut, corn, and wild fruits. In the evenings, villagers often gather to chat in the village square. The peaceful and friendly atmosphere made me want to sit down and share stories with them.
Local Foods You Must Try in Kengtung
Food in Kengtung impressed me greatly. The menus focus on fresh local ingredients with mild, balanced flavors. I enjoyed trying the “village curry,” made with local herbs mixed with pork or chicken and wild vegetables found in the area. There is also sticky rice served with grilled fish and special chili paste recipes unique to each household.
Additionally, there are small shops selling Tai Yai-style Khao Soi, which tastes sweeter and creamier than the Khao Soi in Chiang Mai. Those who prefer milder flavors will likely enjoy it a lot. I even bought some Khao Soi as a souvenir and always remember it fondly whenever I eat it.
Connecting with Other Shan State Experiences
Kengtung is part of the vast and diverse Shan State. For those interested in other perspectives of Shan State, I recommend readingTravel to Hakhawhich is the capital of Chin State, located 1,865 meters above sea level. The cool climate and beautiful nature there are just as stunning as Kengtung. For me, these two towns are like two sides of the same coin, full of deep tribal culture and well-preserved nature.
There are also fascinating stories of the Chin and Tai Yai peoples blending in Shan State, making this journey rich in diverse and profound cultural dimensions. If interested, you can read more in the articleHakhawhere I have recorded my detailed experiences.
Film and Video Records from Kengtung
I captured the atmosphere of Kengtung’s countryside in videos I filmed myself, so everyone can see the real way of life, the beauty of the landscape, and the people here. Take time to stroll through villages, visit markets, and talk with locals because that is the true heart of travel. The journey may be tiring due to less convenient roads, but the experience gained is truly worth it.
