Kengtung Grilled Corn: A flavor I, mr.hotsia, must share from the field
Kengtung, a small town in Shan State of Myanmar that I had the chance to visit, is not only known for its high mountain atmosphere and diverse Tai Yai culture, but also for its street food that is a must-try. One of them is “Kengtung Grilled Corn,” which I, mr.hotsia, can say is one of the most memorable snacks of this trip.
When you stroll through the morning markets and walking streets in Kengtung, you will see many grilled corn stalls lined up with the fragrant aroma of grilled corn hitting your nose as soon as you pass by. I walked slowly and noticed that the vendors carefully grill the corn over traditional charcoal grills, using just the right heat to cook the corn evenly. The corn kernels have a natural sweetness mixed with the smoky scent of charcoal that seeps into the kernels, almost melting in your mouth.
Most Kengtung grilled corn is grilled until the husk is slightly charred and served hot immediately after grilling. Vendors spread butter or some sprinkle a little salt to enhance the flavor. Another special touch is that some stalls have their own dipping sauce made from chili powder, lime juice, and sugar, which adds a balanced and unique taste to the grilled corn. I didn’t miss buying some to eat while exploring the town and local markets here.
From my real experience in Kengtung, grilled corn is not just an ordinary snack but part of the local lifestyle that still firmly preserves its traditional charm. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to talk with a grilled corn vendor who told me that the corn here is grown locally in Shan State, where the good soil and cool climate make the corn sweeter and firmer than elsewhere.
Moreover, traveling to Kengtung is more convenient than many think. You can fly directly from Mandalay, or if you want a bit more adventure, you can travel through the border town of Tachileik without much hassle.Read more about traveling to Kengtungthat I have written before. This kind of journey gives you the chance to see the rural lifestyle and nature along the way that still retains the true countryside character of Myanmar.
On the same trip, I also stopped by a nearby town called Hakawhich is the capital of Chin State. The weather there is cool and surrounded by high mountains, making the landscape and climate completely different from Kengtung. Each town has its own charm and unique local food flavors. And the grilled corn in Kengtung is one of the tastes I still vividly remember.
Local lifestyle and street markets in Kengtung
The markets in Kengtung are lively from early morning. Most people are Tai Yai and Tai Lue who come to sell fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and local foods. Grilled corn is an easy-to-find snack perfect for strolling through the market. I, mr.hotsia, recommend buying hot grilled corn and tasting it as you walk to truly experience the market atmosphere.
Besides grilled corn, there are other foods such as Tai Yai Khanom Jeen (fermented rice noodles), Nam Prik Num (young chili dip), and Tai Yai-style Som Tum (papaya salad) that I tried and really liked. If anyone is interested in authentic local cuisine, Kengtung is a very interesting destination.
