Kengtung Morning Market: The Way of Life of the Tai Yai People in Shan State
If you have heard of Kengtung in Shan State, Myanmar, but have never visited, I, mr.hotsia, would like to invite you to experience the real life of the locals through the morning market of this town. Kengtung Morning Market is not just an ordinary market but the vibrant heart of the Tai Yai and various ethnic groups' way of life in Shan State, which I had the opportunity to visit one early morning.
Kengtung is located in the eastern part of Shan State, near the borders of Thailand and Laos. Traveling to Kengtung is not as complicated as you might think. I have previously written a travel guide article about the route.Traveling to KengtungYou can get there by plane or car, passing through Tachileik or flying directly from Mandalay. I chose to fly to Kyaing and then take a car to Kengtung, which is a convenient route and offers clear views of local life along the way.
Early Morning at Kengtung Market: A Bustling Scene Full of Colors and Aromas
Kengtung Morning Market starts bustling from 5 AM. I, mr.hotsia, walked out from my accommodation not far from the market, winding through small streets still shrouded in light mist, accompanied by the aroma of grilled sticky rice and fresh coffee from roadside stalls that immediately greeted my senses.
This is not just a typical fresh market but a gathering place for villagers from nearby Shan State communities who bring a variety of local products to sell, from fresh vegetables and fruits like native tomatoes and bright orange carrots to herbs and fragrant flowers used in Tai Yai rituals.
One thing I really enjoyed was the atmosphere of conversations in the local language mixed with Burmese, which sounds melodious and unique. There were also laughter and smiles from the vendors that warmly welcomed tourists like me, making me feel like part of the community.
Kengtung Breakfast: Flavors You Must Try
While exploring the market, I, mr.hotsia, could not miss tasting Kengtung’s famous breakfast dishes such as Tai Yai style Khao Pun Nam Ngeow, a rich broth with Shan spices, or Burmese-style steamed buns filled with pork and sweet beans perfectly combined. There are also local snacks like grilled sticky rice wrapped in fragrant banana leaves.
The market also has small coffee shops brewing coffee in traditional ways, served with toasted bread that is crispy outside and soft inside. I recommend sitting down to sip coffee while listening to the morning market sounds to truly experience Kengtung.
Way of Life and Culture at Kengtung Market
Kengtung Morning Market is not just a place for trading goods but also a cultural hub for the Tai Yai and various ethnic groups in Shan State. From talking with locals here, I felt their strong connection to nature and the simplicity of life, as they firmly preserve their traditional customs.
At the market, you will see villagers wearing traditional costumes, exchanging news and stories about their villages with joy. Sometimes there are traditional music performances or singing accompanied by local instruments, which make the market atmosphere lively and warm.
