Phra Chii Niu Kengtung, a spectacular viewpoint in Shan State

Kengtung is a small town in Shan State, Myanmar, where I, mr.hotsia, have had the opportunity to visit several times. Being a border town that still firmly preserves the Tai Yai culture, the atmosphere here is unlike any other place in Myanmar. One of my most memorable experiences was climbing up to the "Phra Chii Niu" viewpoint orKengtung Top View Pointlocated on a high hill in the heart of the town.

The hike up to Phra Chii Niu is not too difficult, but you should prepare for the cool weather and humidity of the forested mountain. Along the path, local villagers walk up and down selling small items, and monks come here for meditation. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy the peaceful and natural atmosphere blended perfectly with devotion.

An unforgettable panoramic view

Upon reaching the summit of Phra Chii Niu, you see Kengtung town spread out as far as the eye can see, a vast sky, and surrounding mountains that act like natural walls protecting the town. The view is so beautiful that I spent time sitting quietly, taking deep breaths to capture the feeling in my heart.

On the day I visited, the weather was pleasant—not too cold—with light mist drifting among the treetops, making the scene look like a painting. The fresh air and birdsong were the best companions. Visiting the Phra Chii Niu viewpoint reminded me of my trip toHakha townthe capital of Chin State, which has similarly high terrain and cool weather. But Kengtung has its own charm due to its diverse people and blended cultures.

Lifestyle and living around Phra Chii Niu

Around Phra Chii Niu, there are small temples and Tai Yai communities that still maintain traditional ways of life. Most locals grow kitchen gardens and raise animals simply. I, mr.hotsia, spoke with many villagers who greeted tourists warmly with smiles.

A small market near the viewpoint offers many local foods to try, such as grilled sticky rice, fermented fish chili paste, and seasonal fruits. I didn’t miss tasting these to experience the authentic flavors of this community. Sitting and enjoying delicious food while admiring the mountain view at Phra Chii Niu is a small happiness that anyone visiting Kengtung should not miss.

Traveling to Kengtung

Kengtung can be reached by air or land. For those with a Myanmar passport and visa, direct flights are available from Mandalay or other cities in Myanmar. For adventure lovers, traveling by road from Tachileik is an option without needing a guide, as I have described in my article.Traveling to Kengtungwhich is convenient and offers a chance to experience the scenery along the way.

For travelers wanting to deeply experience Kengtung, I, mr.hotsia, recommend allowing at least 3-4 days. Besides Phra Chii Niu, there are ancient temples, local markets, and nature around the town worth exploring.

Phra Chii Niu Kengtung is not just an ordinary viewpoint; it is a gateway to feelings of peace and natural beauty. I, mr.hotsia, felt like I traveled back in time to truly experience the lives of the people here.
