Kengtung City Gate Kengtung Wall: The Charm of the Old Town on the Tai Yai Border

Kengtung, a small town in Shan State of Myanmar, is one destination I, mr.hotsia, cannot miss when exploring the Tai Yai land. The appeal of Kengtung is not only its nature or Tai Yai culture but also something that deeply impressed me: the “Kengtung City Gate” or what is called the Kengtung Wall, an ancient city wall that still preserves traces of the old era for us to experience up close.

As a traveler who loves to delve into history and local lifestyles, visiting the Kengtung City Gate felt like opening a new door to fascinating stories from the past. The city gate here is not grand or magnificent but is filled with warmth and friendliness rarely found in typical tourist cities.

Journey to Kengtung: Routes and Stories from the Field

For my trip to Kengtung, I, mr.hotsia, chose a route that many might not know: traveling through Tachileik, which is more convenient and faster, especially for tourists holding passports. This border crossing allows smooth entry and exit without the need to hire expensive guides as before.Read more details about traveling to Kengtung

Upon arriving in Kengtung, the first thing that caught my eye was the old city wall surrounding the town. Although not fully intact, it still clearly tells the story of the past here. This city wall was built to protect against invasions in earlier times and has now become an important landmark that tourists should not miss.

Experience the Atmosphere of Kengtung City Gate

The Kengtung City Gate is located on the town’s main road, a spot where locals and tourists often stop to take photos and chat lively. Around it is a small market selling local products, including fresh handwoven fabrics, seasonal fruits, and local foods with tempting aromas. I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves with homemade fermented fish chili paste from the vendors nearby. The flavor is rich and authentic, hard to find in big cities.

The atmosphere here is filled with the simplicity of the Tai Yai people who still maintain their traditional way of life. Children run and play around the city gate corners, elders sit weaving baskets or weaving cloth on the sidewalks. Everything creates a scene where I, mr.hotsia, feel time seems to pause for a moment.

Connection with Shan State and Nearby Areas

Kengtung is located in Shan State, the land of the Tai Yai people who have a unique culture and language. Visiting here reminded me of my trip to Hakha in Chin State, which I wrote about earlier (Read about the trip to Hakha), located in a region with similar geography and culture. Although they are different ethnic groups, they share many connections in various aspects.

This journey made me realize that Kengtung is not just a small town hidden in Myanmar but a cultural link of the Tai Yai with deep roots and many stories to discover. Moreover, Kengtung is a gateway to other towns like Yong or Hakha, which I have documented before (Stories of Yong, Stories of Hakha)

Recommended Activities Around Kengtung City Gate

Besides walking around the city wall and taking photos, the area around Kengtung City Gate has a very interesting morning market that I, mr.hotsia, recommend exploring early in the morning. This market gathers locals and hill tribe people who bring local products to sell, including fresh vegetables, fruits, handicrafts, and local foods such as fresh rice noodles, Tai Yai chili paste, and roasted sticky rice.

If you like photography, I suggest visiting at dawn because the morning sunlight shines beautifully through the city gate arch and market, along with the lively movement of people. You will capture images full of stories and the vibrant colors of authentic Tai Yai culture.

Kengtung City Gate from mr.hotsia’s Perspective

For me, mr.hotsia, visiting Kengtung City Gate was not just a border crossing but a journey back to the past of the Tai Yai land rich in history and profound culture. I saw the old town that still retains its true self, not altered for tourism to lose its sincerity.

Kengtung is therefore a town suitable for travelers who enjoy deep, unhurried journeys and want to experience the real lifestyle of the Tai Yai community. Besides the city gate as a symbol, there are stories of people, markets, and food that complete the travel experience perfectly.

If you are interested in trips connected with culture and history and enjoy the warm atmosphere of a small town, I, mr.hotsia, recommend planning a visit to Kengtung and don’t forget to stop by this old city gate at least once.
