Monghpyak, Praek Town, Rest Stop on the Way to Kengtung

If you are planning a trip to Kengtung, Monghpyak, locally called Praek Town, is an important rest stop that I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend you to visit and experience the atmosphere before continuing to Kengtung. This town is located in Shan State, Myanmar, situated between Tachileik and Kengtung. It acts as a small gateway welcoming travelers who want to explore northern Myanmar.

From my personal travel experience, stopping in Monghpyak is not just about refueling or taking a short break, but also a great opportunity to truly experience the lifestyle of the Tai Yai people in Shan State. The town is not very large but has a lively local market where you can shop for local foods and various goods. I still remember the market was full of fresh and dried food stalls, including fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, and local delicacies that are hard to find elsewhere.

The journey from Tachileik to Monghpyak takes about 1 hour. Most of the road is paved and in good condition. However, at the junction heading to Kengtung, the road changes to rough dirt and gravel paths, requiring an additional 3 hours to cover approximately 80 kilometers. I recommend preparing yourself for a bumpy and dusty ride, but it is rewarded with beautiful scenery along the way and the chance to see local villagers living simple lives.

For those unfamiliar with traveling in Shan State, seeking advice from a local guide will make the trip much smoother. Guides assist with border crossing documents and ensure safety during the journey. I have used local guides fluent in Thai and Burmese, which made communication easy and provided deep insights into the culture and history of the Tai Yai people.

Lifestyle and Culture in Monghpyak

I had the chance to stroll through the Monghpyak morning market and saw Tai Yai villagers wearing colorful traditional costumes, bustling as they went to work or trade. The atmosphere was filled with the aroma of spices and freshly made local dishes, such as soft white sticky rice paired with sour fish curry or delicious grilled pork from street vendors. There were also local snacks like “Tai Yai rice crackers,” made from sticky rice and mung beans, delightfully addictive.

I recommend trying the “Tai Yai milk tea” at a local tea shop. It has a strong, distinctive flavor different from other teas in Myanmar. Sitting and sipping hot tea while watching people pass by made me feel relaxed and more connected to the local way of life.

Connecting to the Next Route: Kengtung and Nearby Towns

After resting in Monghpyak, my next destination was Kengtung, another fascinating town in Shan State. The journey from Monghpyak to Kengtung requires preparation for a rather challenging route.Read more about traveling to Kengtungwhich I documented in a previous trip.

Additionally, Monghpyak is a convenient connection point for travelers wishing to visit the nearby town of Mong Yang. I have written travel notes aboutMong Yang, Myanmarwhich is another charming town with an interesting lifestyle. Traveling to these towns gave me a deeper understanding of the cultural diversity of the Tai Yai people in this region.

Real Experiences from the Field: mr.hotsia's Impressions

While staying in Monghpyak, I spoke with many locals who spoke Thai, which made me feel warmly welcomed as if I were home. I also received recommendations for accommodations and delicious food that might be easily missed without a guide. Most accommodations in Monghpyak are small, simple guesthouses but clean and very friendly. I chose to stay in one to truly experience the atmosphere.

In the evening in Monghpyak, I walked along the street, stopping to photograph old wooden houses that are well preserved. The nature around the town remains lush and fresh, making me feel recharged before continuing my journey to Kengtung.

If you enjoy travel that combines nature, culture, and authentic local experiences, Monghpyak is a destination that mr.hotsia highly recommends you not to miss.
