Restaurants in Kengtung: Delicious flavors you must try when visiting the Tai Yai city
Kengtung, locally called "Keng Tung," is a small town in Shan State, Myanmar, filled with the charm of Tai Yai culture and uniquely beautiful nature. For me, mr.hotsia, traveling from Thailand, tasting the local food here is a valuable and unforgettable experience.
First, I must say that traveling to Kengtung is not easy, as I have previously described inTravel article to KengtungBut once you arrive, the fatigue disappears immediately because this town is full of charm in both lifestyle and unique local cuisine.
Atmosphere of restaurants in Kengtung town
Most restaurants in Kengtung are small and simply decorated but filled with the warmth of the owners and the atmosphere of a border town blending Tai Yai and Burmese cultures perfectly. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy strolling through the morning markets here because besides seeing the local way of life, I get to taste fresh food from many street stalls.
One restaurant that impressed me greatly is located near the central market. They have a signature dish called “Tai Yai Khao Soi,” which tastes different from Khao Soi in Chiang Mai or elsewhere. It is rich with authentic Tai Yai spices, the broth is smooth, the noodles chewy, and importantly, fresh meat is used. There are also other local dishes such as tamarind leaf chicken curry, Nam Ngiao noodles, and eel soup, which are hard to find elsewhere.
Tai Yai food in Kengtung that I, mr.hotsia, never miss
Speaking of Tai Yai food, I must recommend “Tai Yai Som Tum” as a favorite dish to try. The Som Tum here uses dried chili and a special fermented fish sauce recipe that gives a perfectly balanced sour and spicy flavor, not as hot as Thai Som Tum. Ingredients like papaya, tomato, and roasted peanuts add diverse textures. Also, the “Herbal Grilled Chicken,” marinated with local spices, is another dish I recommend because the chicken is juicy and fragrant with wild herbs traditionally used by locals.
Another must-try dish is “Bamboo Shoot Curry,” made from fresh bamboo shoots from the surrounding mountains, cooked with rich curry paste and fresh tomatoes, perfectly complementing the meal. I, mr.hotsia, see the food in Kengtung reflecting a simple yet profound lifestyle with true care for local ingredients.
Markets and fresh ingredient sources
If you come to Kengtung and want to truly experience the Tai Yai way of life, I recommend visiting the morning or evening central market. It is full of fresh produce stalls such as local vegetables, seasonal fruits, Salween River fish, and various meats sold by villagers. I, mr.hotsia, tried buying fresh fish to cook at my accommodation, which was a fun experience and a chance to learn simple local cooking methods.
Additionally, the market has stalls selling local foods like grilled sticky rice, fried chicken, and rare Tai Yai desserts such as millet cakes and bean-filled pastries, all freshly made and very affordable.
