Shan New Year in Kengtung: A real experience from mr.hotsia
Kengtung is a small town in Shan State, Myanmar, rarely talked about, but for me, mr.hotsia, the chance to experienceShan New YearHere is a unique experience that must be remembered for a lifetime
I started my journey from Mandalay, which has convenient direct flights to Kengtung. On the day I arrived in Kengtung, I felt the peacefulness and the friendly atmosphere of the locals. This place is unlike big cities like Mandalay or Yangon but is filled with the preserved Shan culture.
The uniqueness of Shan New Year
Shan New Year, also called “Shan Songkran,” is celebrated in April like the Thai New Year. However, in Kengtung, it features distinct and harmonious colors and activities. The Shan people gather in the central town square to make merit by giving alms, play water during Songkran, and participate in ancient traditional ceremonies.
I had the chance to stroll through the local market during the festival. It offers a variety of foods such as grilled sticky rice, Shan noodles, and fresh seasonal fruits at very affordable prices. The Kengtung market is not large but bustling with energy and smiles from locals warmly welcoming tourists.
Shan lifestyle and culture in Kengtung
Kengtung is a town that strongly preserves the traditional Shan way of life. I spoke with locals who mostly speak Shan and Burmese fluently. Some also speak Thai due to long-standing cultural ties with Thailand.
An interesting aspect is the traditional attire during Shan New Year, where women wear brightly colored native dresses, and men wear traditional patterned shirts with Shan hats. I tried on the native costume and took photos with locals, which was an unforgettable experience.
Routes and travel to Kengtung
For travelers like me who enjoy challenges, traveling to Kengtung is not difficult but requires good planning, especially if traveling by land from Tachileik. Entry into Myanmar here does not require a guide, and crossing the border with an ID card or passport is convenient.I have previously written a detailed travel story about going to Kengtungwhich helps make preparation much easier.
If anyone wants a similar town atmosphere but with higher altitude and cooler weather, I recommend tryingHakha townwhich is in the nearby Chin State. There, I experienced the cold climate and the distinct lifestyle of the Chin people. It is a town worth visiting if you have enough time.
Recommended accommodations and local food in Kengtung
Kengtung has limited accommodation options but offers affordable guesthouses and homestays that are clean and provide good service. I stayed at a small guesthouse owned by a local, which allowed me to get close to the lifestyle and receive good advice about tourist spots around town.
Food in Kengtung is another charm that captivated me, especially authentic Shan dishes like Shan chicken noodles with rich broth or hot grilled sticky rice sold by the roadside. There are also various Burmese dishes such as chicken curry and fresh locally grown vegetables. The flavors tend to be milder and use fewer spices than Thai cuisine.
Shan New Year atmosphere in Kengtung through mr.hotsia’s eyes
During Shan New Year, I witnessed the unity and cultural pride of the Shan people in Kengtung. Children joyfully played water during Songkran, adults participated earnestly in ceremonies, and there were beautiful traditional performances reflecting genuine pride in their roots.
If anyone is interested in seeing the real atmosphere, I recommend watchingthe Shan New Year video in Kengtungwhich I recorded. It helps to better understand and clearly see what makes this place interesting.
Connecting tourism in Shan State
Besides Kengtung, Shan State has many other interesting towns such as Mong Yang, which I have written about inthe story of Mong Yangor if you want to experience nature and Chin culture, do not miss Hakha townwhich I have also described. All of these reflect the diversity and beauty of Shan State that some may not yet know.
Summary of impressions of Shan New Year in Kengtung
Shan New Year in Kengtung is not just a water festival or Songkran play but an opportunity for the Shan people to fully express their love for their culture. For me, mr.hotsia, traveling to experience this gave me a deeper understanding of the lifestyle and living of the Shan people in Myanmar.
