Songkran Kengtung: A Deep Water and Cultural Festival in Shan State
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience Songkran in Kengtung, a small town in Shan State, Myanmar, which few people know or have visited. The reason I chose to come to Kengtung during Songkran (Songkran Kengtung) was not just for the fun water festival, but to learn about the culture and lifestyle of the Tai Yai people in this mountainous and ethnically diverse land.
Kengtung is located in Shan State, also known as Shan State, home to the Tai Yai ethnic group and other communities. This area still preserves raw natural beauty and deeply rooted culture. I have previously written about my trip to Hakha cityPrevious Articlewhich is not far away, but Kengtung has its own unique charm.
Journey to Kengtung: Stories from the Field
Traveling here is not easy for general tourists, but for me, mr.hotsia, who loves adventure, coming to Kengtung was like opening a new world. If you have a passport, you can get a visa at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok and fly into other cities in Myanmar, then take a domestic flight to Kengtung. Or if you prefer land routes, you can cross the border at Tachileik into Kengtung without needing to hire a guide.
If you don't have a passport, you can still use your ID card to get a temporary pass to travel within Tachileik and Kengtung areas by preparing photos and applying for permission at the Myanmar immigration checkpoint. In this case, you must hire a guide to assist with navigation and document handling. Most guides speak Thai and Tai Yai, making travel much easier and more understandable.
Songkran Kengtung Atmosphere: The Power of Water and Warmth of the Tai Yai People
Songkran Kengtung is not just a water play festival like in Thailand, but a time when locals show respect to elders, chant prayers, make merit at temples, and hold ceremonies blending Buddhist beliefs and Tai Yai culture harmoniously. The streets fill with smiles and laughter of children holding water bowls and water guns, joyfully splashing water to cool off.
I, mr.hotsia, strolled through Kengtung's morning market selling fresh produce, local fruits, and Tai Yai cuisine. Here, hot sticky rice is served with chili paste and fresh mountain vegetables. The simplicity yet rich flavors left a lasting impression. I also tasted fresh strawberries from mountain farms. Kengtung is famous for high-quality strawberry cultivation, with gardens and farms open for tourists to pick their own.
The Blended Lifestyle and Culture of Kengtung
Kengtung is a city with ethnic and linguistic diversity, but what I, mr.hotsia, felt was the warmth and smiles of the locals, whether Tai Yai, Burmese, or other ethnic groups. There are ancient temples preserving Tai Yai art identity well. Walking around the temples and pagodas in town reminded me of the Chai Talarn Pagoda in Mawlamyine, which I have visited. It has a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful sunset views.
Additionally, traveling to Mong Yang, not far from Kengtung, is a good option for those wanting to see more of Shan State's life and nature. I have written travel notes aboutMong Yangwhich has challenging roads and stunning mountain views as well.
