Accommodation recommendations in Mawlamyine, Mon State, Myanmar by mr.hotsia
Mawlamyine is a riverside port city on the Salween River in Mon State, a charming destination for travelers who enjoy a peaceful atmosphere amidst the simple lifestyle of the Burmese people. It is also a city of historical and cultural significance in Myanmar. For me, mr.hotsia, this visit to Mawlamyine was not just a brief stop; I chose to stay here for 6 nights to fully absorb the slow-paced atmosphere of this riverside city.
For budget travelers, the accommodation I found suitable and would like to recommend isThe Breeze Guest HouseOr as I casually call it, "The Breezy Guest House." It is a small guesthouse located by the Salween River, within easy walking distance to the night market and morning market. Especially in the morning, the market is bustling with locals and vendors selling local products.
The accommodation price here is very cheap compared to the quality received. I stayed in a shared bathroom room for 7,000 kyats per night, approximately 210 baht. If you want more convenience, the guesthouse also offers rooms with private bathrooms and western toilets at 14 USD per night for two people. The water flow is strong and clean. Although the bathroom is traditional style, it feels comfortable and easier to use than expected. Additionally, free Wi-Fi internet is available, but not all rooms receive a strong signal due to the old building and riverside location.
One of my impressions of The Breeze Guest House is waking up in the morning and looking out to see the Salween River flowing gently along with the villagers starting their day. Some days I would sit sipping coffee in my favorite corner of the guesthouse and honestly say that this atmosphere is hard to find in busy big cities.
Life in Mawlamyine and Getting Around the City
Mawlamyine is not a very large city. Getting around is very convenient with affordable motorcycle taxis costing only 15 baht. I often use this service to go watch the sunset atKyaikthanlan Pagodawhich is not far from the city center. The view there is so beautiful that I want to return many times. Also, in the city, there are interesting local markets and restaurants, such as the Mawlamyine-style stir-fried chicken restaurant that I have visited and was impressed by (read more atRecommended Restaurants in Mawlamyine: Mawlamyine Stir-Fried Chicken)
For Thai tourists, Mawlamyine is an easy city to travel in without worrying about language barriers because many people here speak Thai. This makes communication easy, even when I talked to locals without using English at all. This convenience is rare in neighboring countries.
Tips for Booking Accommodation and Other Hotel Recommendations in Mawlamyine
I, mr.hotsia, recommend booking accommodation in advance online, especially for the first night. When I stayed, many Thai tourists came as walk-ins but were disappointed because all rooms were full. Booking ahead saves time and hassle searching for hotels in the city, which can be tiring and chaotic. If you plan to travel to other cities in Shan or Mon State, staying here is a great starting point.
Besides The Breeze Guest House where I stayed, I also saw two other budget hotels in the city with reasonable prices. There are several two-star and above hotels with prices starting around 40 USD per night. If you have a bigger budget and want more comfort, book a better hotel. When I travel, I usually choose comfortable accommodation to keep my body ready for further trips to cities in Shan State such asHakhaorKengtungwhich I have previously written about.
Sometimes I ask the guesthouse owner or regular customers to recommend other hotels or guesthouses and help make reservations, and many are happy to assist. But if not convenient, it’s okay because the city has enough accommodation options and easy transportation.
