Hotels and Guesthouses in Kengtung: Local-style accommodations personally chosen by mr.hotsia
Kengtung, locally known as "Tong Yang," is a small town inShan Stateof Myanmar, with a unique charm. The Tai Yai lifestyle, bustling fresh markets, and a peaceful atmosphere full of stories to discover. On my trip to Kengtung, I chose to stay at “Harry Guesthouse,” which is considered one of the most convenient accommodations to experience the local way of life.
Harry Guesthouse is located on the outskirts of Kengtung, near a small fresh market that fills with people in the morning buying fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and local food. I enjoy waking up early and walking to the nearby fresh market before heading out to explore the town. For those who want to truly experience local life rather than just passing through, Harry Guesthouse is a great starting point.
However, if you want to fully experience walking around the old town of Kengtung, I recommend staying in the downtown area near the Central Market, which is not far from the large morning market. Staying in this area allows you to stroll through the old town, walk to Nong Tung, or easily find fresh coffee and simple food without relying on motorcycle taxis. Although accommodations here are somewhat more expensive than Harry Guesthouse, it is ideal for those who want to fully immerse themselves in the local lifestyle of Kengtung.
Getting Around and Walking in Kengtung
Kengtung is a relatively small town. For getting around, I mostly used motorcycle taxis, which are quite available and affordable. Especially from Harry Guesthouse to various spots in town, the fare is about 10-15 baht per trip. It’s very convenient and fast.
The Central Market and morning markets in Kengtung are the heart of the town. I had the chance to walk through the morning market early in the day, seeing fresh freshwater fish, local fruits and vegetables, and local delicacies worth trying, such as grilled sticky rice or fresh herbal drinks made by locals. This market is also the center of daily life for Kengtung residents, where simple but friendly exchanges take place.
Harry Guesthouse: Accommodation chosen by mr.hotsia to experience Kengtung’s way of life
At Harry Guesthouse, I met very friendly owners and staff, who are siblings of Mr. Jai Luang, a local guide I recommend inmy travel article about Kengtung. This accommodation is simple but clean and orderly, offering various room types suitable for travelers seeking comfort at an affordable price.
Although the guesthouse is on the outskirts, getting to the town center is not a problem because motorcycle taxis are always available in front of the guesthouse. I often took several round trips daily to walk the market, explore the old town, or try food at small local restaurants. This convenience made my trip to Kengtung much more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Why I Like Kengtung? A Lifestyle That Remains Authentic
Kengtung is a town that has preserved its local charm well. The Tai Yai lifestyle here is peaceful and friendly. I, mr.hotsia, am impressed every time I walk through small alleys or hear locals chatting lively. In some parts of town, there are old wooden houses that reflect the history of the Tai Yai people.
Besides the accommodation and lively markets, Kengtung also offers interesting natural and cultural attractions, such as Nong Tung, a large pond in the town center, perfect for evening walks to observe local life and activities. You can also visitJedi Chaitalan Pagodawhich holds historical and spiritual significance for the local people.

Summary of Accommodation and Travel Experience in Kengtung with mr.hotsia
If you are planning a trip to Kengtung, I, mr.hotsia, recommend considering two main types of accommodation: one near the Central Market in the town center, ideal for those who enjoy walking and exploring market life and the old town; and the other is Harry Guesthouse, where I stayed, located on the outskirts but convenient for travel by motorcycle taxi and offering a quieter atmosphere.
Kengtung is not a large city but is full of charm and stories in every corner. It is a town I like to visit again and want everyone to truly experience the sincerity of the Tai Yai people here.
