Driving back home to Keng Tung, stopping to eat at 7-Eleven before decorating the house to surprise Nong Paeng
Hello, I ammr.hotsiaToday I will take everyone to experience the atmosphere of the journey back home to Keng Tung, Shan State, Myanmar, which is one of the most charming cities with fascinating lifestyles in this region. This trip is not just an ordinary homecoming but also a preparation for Christmas with a warm atmosphere and a surprise for Nong Paeng in Keng Tung.
That morning I started my journey from Mong Yang, which I mentioned in the previous article (read more atMong Yang, Myanmar). The trip from Mong Yang to Keng Tung takes quite some time due to the distance and the road conditions that are not very developed yet. But for me, driving through the mountain-surrounded and natural landscapes of Shan State is a unique joy.
Stopping to recharge at 7-Eleven – a simple but special rest stop
Along the way, I stopped to eat at a 7-Eleven convenience store located on the main road of Keng Tung. This spot is a very convenient rest point for long-distance travelers in Shan State. Although the 7-Eleven here looks small and simple, it offers a variety of food choices, including tasty boxed meals, refreshing drinks, and local snacks blending Thai-Myanmar cultures.
I enjoy observing the lifestyle of people in this store. Although it is a typical convenience store, locals visit regularly, including Tai Yai people and other ethnic minorities who speak some Thai. This creates a friendly and warm atmosphere like a community store.
Back home in Keng Tung, preparing to decorate the house for Christmas
After recharging, I drove into Keng Tung town, a small city full of Tai Yai cultural charm and peaceful natural surroundings. I spent the afternoon decorating the old house at Nong Paeng’s home, intending to surprise her this Christmas.
Decorating a house in Keng Tung is different from big cities with fancy decoration shops. I prefer the simplicity here. Nong Paeng and I bought decorative lights from the local market, along with fresh flowers and handwoven fabrics unique to the Tai Yai people. Locals advised that these decorations make the house warm and lively.
The atmosphere in Keng Tung is slightly cooler now, with average temperatures around 15-20 degrees Celsius, perfect for chatting and preparing for the Christmas party.
Keng Tung and the bond of the Tai Yai people
Keng Tung is a city I mentioned in the articleTraveling to Keng Tungwhich has a strong Tai Yai history and culture. Although it is a small city, the people here are warm and friendly to tourists. I remember the last time I came to Keng Tung, I talked with locals about Tai Yai traditions and lifestyles, which made me understand and love this city more.
For me, coming back here during Christmas is not only a time to relax but also a great opportunity to share happiness with Nong Paeng and the small community here.
Preparing a warm Christmas surprise for Nong Paeng
One reason I deliberately drove back to Keng Tung at this time is to prepare a Christmas surprise for Nong Paeng. Inside the house we decorated carefully, I arranged small gifts symbolizing love and friendship, along with a homemade cake made from local ingredients.
Nong Paeng is a local I have known since my previous visit to Keng Tung. I admire her diligence and warmth. Seeing Nong Paeng’s smile that day was the most precious gift for me.
Closing: Keng Tung, a small city that is big in my heart
This road trip back home to Keng Tung allowed me to experience a lifestyle and simplicity not found in big cities — stopping to eat comfortably at 7-Eleven, decorating the house with our own hands, and preparing a Christmas surprise for loved ones. I believe true happiness in travel is not at the destination but in the small details along the way and the relationships we build.
