Detailed travel information about Chiang Tung and Mong Yang, Myanmar with mr.hotsia
When it comes to adventurous travel in Myanmar's Shan State, locally called “Tai Yai,” one of the destinations I, mr.hotsia, confidently recommend is Chiang Tung and Mong Yang — two small towns full of cultural charm, authentic lifestyles, and pristine nature.
Chiang Tung: A Town Perfectly Blending Tai Yai and Burmese Cultures
Chiang Tung is a small town located in Shan State, near the Thailand-Myanmar border. For travelers like mr.hotsia, there are two main ways to get to Chiang Tung: if you have a passport and Myanmar visa, you can fly directly from major cities in Myanmar. Alternatively, you can enter by land from Tachileik, which is convenient and straightforward. There is no need to hire an expensive guide costing 1,000 baht per day as many believe, because locals here speak Thai very well.
For those without a passport and using a national ID card like me, you must obtain a temporary border pass at Tachileik, which allows a 7-day stay only within the Tachileik area. To go to Chiang Tung, you must use a local guide service. I recommend Jai Luang, a local guide I have used — he is a native who deeply understands the history and lifestyle of the Tai Yai people in Chiang Tung.
Upon arriving in Chiang Tung, what I love most is the peaceful and simple town atmosphere, markets full of local products including fresh vegetables, fruits, and unique snacks not found elsewhere, as well as temples featuring architecture blending Tai Yai and Burmese styles. This place is perfect for those who enjoy learning about culture and exploring authentic community lifestyles.
Mong Yang: The Hidden Charm in Shan State's Valleys
After traveling with friends from Tachileik by rented car with driver for 3 days and 2 nights to visit Mong Yang, I must say the experience was rewarding. Although the roads were winding and some parts rough, the mountain and lush forest scenery along the way made every minute worthwhile.
Mong Yang is about 180 kilometers from Tachileik, with a rest stop at Pyak or Phae town, which is the junction for routes to Chiang Tung and Mong Yang. Independent travelers can take a bus from Tachileik to Mong Yang for about 200 baht, taking around 4-5 hours. However, for convenience and safety like me, I recommend renting a car with a driver and local guide, who can also handle border documents and share in-depth local stories and history.
What impressed me most in Mong Yang is the Tai Yai people's lifestyle, which strongly preserves traditional customs. The local market is fresh and colorful with native fruits and vegetables, along with finely crafted handmade handicrafts. Mong Yang is also a great starting point for those wishing to continue traveling to Chiang Tung or various tribal villages in Shan State.
Connecting Travel and Adventure in Shan State
For travelers wanting to experience more of Shan State's beauty, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting Hakha, the capital of Chin State, not far away. It features high mountains and a cool climate year-round, especially in winter when snow regularly falls. Traveling to Hakha is challenging but rewarding with beautiful scenery and diverse tribal cultures.Read Travel Information to HakhaTo Prepare Before Your Trip
