End of the Chiang Tung World Opening Trip with Mr. Hotsia On Tour Chanchai.net
Chiang Tung, a city I, Mr. Hotsia, recently had the chance to visit, is another destination in Shan State, Myanmar that truly opens a different world of travel. For those who love nature, traditional lifestyles, and authentic culture, Chiang Tung is an answer not to be missed.
For this trip, I traveled with my companion Mr. Chanchai and On Tour. We rented a car with a driver for convenience and flexibility to explore the city and surrounding areas. The trip lasted 3 days and 2 nights, with car rental costing about 7,000 baht and guide fees 6,000 baht, which is reasonable for the convenience and in-depth information we received.
Easy Access to Chiang Tung
For those interested in traveling to Chiang Tung, there are two main routes to know: by air and by land. If you havea passportyou can obtain a Myanmar visa through the usual process and fly into Chiang Tung from other cities in Myanmar. Alternatively, the road route from Tachileik is very convenient because you don’t have to hire a guide for 1,000 baht per day as required when using a temporary pass with a mandatory guide. Good planning can reduce costs and increase freedom.
The land route from Tachileik to Chiang Tung allowed me to experience the reality of the roads and the scenery filled with high mountains and Tai Yai villages that still maintain a simple lifestyle. Although the roads are not as comfortable as in other countries, the beauty of nature and unspoiled culture makes every minute of the journey worthwhile.
Chiang Tung: A City Full of Cultural and Natural Charm
Chiang Tung is located in the heart of Shan State, making it an important connection point to other cities in the region. What I experienced was the Tai Yai people's lifestyle here, which still strongly preserves traditions and the local language. The fresh market in Chiang Tung is bustling with local foods and seasonal fruits, such as Chiang Tung Job's tears, which are rare to find in Thailand, as well as local dishes like coconut fish curry with wild vegetables and sticky rice cooked in fragrant banana leaves.
The morning market atmosphere here is full of colors and the laughter of locals. I tried various local foods, including grilled sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, fried bananas, and freshly squeezed fruit juices from nearby farms. Visiting Chiang Tung is not just about sightseeing but also tasting the authentic Tai Yai cuisine that is both spicy and mellow at the same time.
Near Hakha and Loikaw: Deeply Experience Shan State's Landscape
During this trip to Chiang Tung, I also extended my journey to visit other cities in Shan State such as Hakha, which is located about 1,865 meters above sea level and is a city full of complex mountains and interesting Chin villages.Hakha CityIt is another destination I recommend if you enjoy cool weather and pure natural surroundings because the climate and atmosphere there are distinctly different from Chiang Tung.
There is also Loikaw city, which I have documented inLoikaw City Article, Myanmarwhich is not far from Tachileik. Traveling to Loikaw requires a passport and visa just like Chiang Tung, but the rough road and challenges make this journey exciting and offer a true experience of the Tai Yai lifestyle.
Life in the Old Town That Retains Its Identity
In Chiang Tung, I explored old teak houses and talked with locals who speak some Thai, making communication smooth and allowing me to learn deeply about the city's history. These old Tai Yai houses have unique designs and lifestyles that perfectly reflect their close bond with nature.
If you want to truly understand the lifestyles of the Tai Yai and Chin people, I recommend visitingthe old Chin houses in Hakha citywhich are fascinating cultural and historical learning centers. Besides seeing traditional houses, you also have the chance to hear stories from homeowners who have inherited wisdom for generations.
