Taunggyi or Taunggyi City, Capital of Shan State, Myanmar
When talking about Shan State in Myanmar, for meTaunggyior sometimes calledTaunggyi Cityis a city I truly want everyone to experience for themselves because this place is not only the capital of Shan State but also the cultural center of the Tai Yai people with a very unique identity. It can be said that this land perfectly blends the beauty of nature and local lifestyle. I, mr.hotsia, have explored and traveled here and want to share my honest experience as I truly felt it.
Taunggyi is located on the Shan Plateau with cool and pleasant weather all year round, especially in winter when the mountain breeze feels refreshing like being on a hill in our homeland. I traveled there in March; the weather was just right, not too hot, perfect for strolling through markets and observing local life. I enjoyed wandering along the main streets filled with local shops and the liveliest fresh market in the city. Taunggyi Market is a hub for fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and Tai Yai local dishes. If you like new flavors, you must try them.
To get here, I recommend flying into Mandalay and then taking a bus or private car to Taunggyi because the road is still not very convenient but worth it for the beautiful mountain views along the way. This kind of travel lets you truly see the local way of life, unlike direct flights that might miss these atmospheres. I myself took a car from Mandalay passing through Kale (Kalaymyo), which I have written about in a previous article.Traveling to Hakha Citywhich is a route connecting Shan State and Chin State, allowing me to see the diversity of tribes and authentic Burmese culture.
Upon arriving in Taunggyi, what impressed me most was the morning market atmosphere filled with the sounds of conversations and bargaining between vendors. Fresh vegetables lined up in vibrant colors, local fruits like sweet pineapples and organic strawberries grown in highlands, as well as local dishes only found here such as sticky rice with Tai Yai chili paste. The flavors are spicy yet balanced, reminding me of Northern Thai cuisine.
Culture and history are also charms of this city. There are beautiful temples and pagodas reflecting the beliefs and art of the Tai Yai people very well. I visited an ancient pagoda that locals told me is historically significant to Shan State and also a viewpoint offering a 360-degree view of Taunggyi. I spent time watching the sunset there with locals chatting happily—a moment I will never forget.
If you are interested in exploring the capital of Shan State deeply, I recommend also visiting other cities in Shan State such asKengtungwhich has the charm of a small riverside town, andNyaung Shwewhich is full of nature and traditional local culture. I have written about these cities in previous articles. Traveling to these places will give you a more complete picture of Shan State's diversity.
For accommodation in Taunggyi, there are hotels and guesthouses ranging from budget to mid-range. I mostly stayed in local guesthouses that are well cared for and feel like home. Talking with the owners and community helped me understand the lifestyle of the Tai Yai people in Shan State better, and I also got to try homemade breakfast with unique flavors not found elsewhere.
Speaking of dinner in Taunggyi, you must not miss authentic Tai Yai cuisine. I tried a small local-recommended restaurant with signature dishes like Hang Lay curry and grilled pork marinated with special spices. The flavors are balanced yet distinctive. I, mr.hotsia, tried them and must say they were truly satisfying.
Additionally, I had the chance to meet locals working in handicrafts, such as Tai Yai weaving with beautiful patterns and stories in each design varying by tribe. Seeing them work with their hands and hearts made me feel that the culture here is proudly preserved.
If you enjoy deep cultural and natural travel, Taunggyi in Shan State is a destination you should visit at least once. If you want to know more about the context of cities in Shan State, I recommend the articleHakha Citywhich is the capital of Chin State not far away and has interesting stories about various tribes in Myanmar. Or if you like cultural tourism with deep history, try reading aboutKyaikthanlan Pagodain Mawlamyine, where I watched the sunset and experienced an atmosphere full of traditional love legends.
Finally, if you want to see a clear atmosphere of Taunggyi, I recommend the video I made onYouTube: Taunggyi or Taunggyi City, Capital of Shan State, Myanmarwhich will help you see the real image and atmosphere of this city better.
For travelers interested, I, mr.hotsia, suggest preparing your mind to embrace new experiences with a camera and comfortable walking shoes because every corner of this city is full of stories and beauty waiting for you to discover and experience yourself.
