Where to exchange Burmese money for traveling to Kengtung, Mong Yawng? The answer from mr.hotsia
If you are planning to visit Kengtung or Mong Yawng in Shan State, Myanmar, one thing I, mr.hotsia, often encounter and get asked is “Where to exchange Burmese money?” Many people may not be familiar with using Kyat in this area, and the money exchange system is different from big cities or Bangkok directly. Preparing your Kyat money well is important to ensure a smooth trip without any inconvenience and to fully experience the local lifestyle.
Getting to Know Kengtung and Mong Yawng in Shan State
Kengtung, commonly known among Thais as “Mong Yawng,” is a small town in Shan State with unique beauty and character. It is a fascinating blend of Tai Yai and Burmese Lanna cultures. I, mr.hotsia, have traveled here several times, especially on my latest trip where I traveled from Tachileik through Mong Yawng to Kengtung, a route that offers close insight into the local people's way of life.Read More About Mong Yawng, MyanmarMore Detailed
Mong Yawng is about 180 kilometers from Tachileik. The road is not very good, but this is part of the charm of traveling in Shan State. Along the way, you will see vast rice fields, green mountains, and Tai Yai villages that still maintain traditional lifestyles.
Where to Exchange Money? The Right Answer for Travelers
From my personal experience, mr.hotsia, I recommend exchanging Kyat in advance either in Thailand or at Tachileik before continuing to Kengtung or Mong Yawng. These towns do not have convenient banks or money exchange shops like big cities.
At Tachileik, a border town between Myanmar and Thailand, there are several small money exchange shops and banks. Generally, exchanging Thai Baht to Kyat here offers better rates than in Kengtung or Mong Yawng. Additionally, some ATMs at Tachileik support international cards for cash withdrawal, but do not rely on them too much as sometimes they may run out of cash.
In Kengtung and Mong Yawng, although there are some money exchange shops, the rates are usually not as good as Tachileik, and some shops may limit the amount you can exchange. Therefore, I recommend preparing enough Kyat for your trip before entering these towns.
How to Exchange Money and Prepare Before Traveling
Because Kengtung and Mong Yawng are relatively quiet towns with few foreign tourists, exchanging an appropriate amount of Kyat is very important. I, mr.hotsia, suggest exchanging Thai Baht to Kyat at Tachileik before crossing into Myanmar for better rates and convenience. Exchanging money at Mandalay Airport or other airports in Myanmar usually offers worse rates and often charges high fees.
Also, prepare small Kyat banknotes (such as 100, 500 Kyat) because small shops in Kengtung and Mong Yawng rarely accept large bills and may not have change.
For travelers using passports, do not forget to obtain a Myanmar visa before traveling, as Mong Yawng and Kengtung strictly enforce documentation, unlike Hakha in Chin State, which I have previously described.Traveling to Hakhawhich has different travel details and visa situations.
Life and Lifestyle in Kengtung, Mong Yawng
Kengtung and Mong Yawng are small towns full of the charm of Tai Yai and Shan Burmese lifestyles. Roads are still dirt roads, lined with local shops, traditional restaurants, and fresh markets selling vegetables and fruits from the mountains. Most vendors speak some Thai, making communication not too difficult.
I, mr.hotsia, once rode a tuk-tuk around Kengtung to explore the town and morning market. Here, you can experience the atmosphere of a small town that still preserves its traditional culture impressively. Local restaurants serve Tai Yai dishes such as chicken khao soi, grilled pork, and spicy curries. What I enjoy most is eating at small roadside eateries crowded with locals.
Traveling to Kengtung and Mong Yawng
The most convenient way for Thai tourists is to travel from Tachileik with a valid Myanmar visa. Then take a van or bus to Mong Yawng, which takes about 4-5 hours. From Mong Yawng, you can continue by car to Kengtung in about 3 hours. The roads may be rougher and less smooth than expected, but renting a car with a driver, as I have done, is much more convenient.Read More About Traveling to Kengtung
Additional Tips from mr.hotsia
I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to prepare their money well because there are no credit cards or widespread ATMs like in big cities here. Exchange enough Kyat for your trip, check exchange rates at Tachileik before traveling, and remember to carry small bills for daily expenses.
Also, plan your documents and visa carefully before traveling because Kengtung and Mong Yawng are different from Hakha inChin Statewhich has an easier tourism and entry system, or Hakha city, which I have written about inTraveling to Hakhaa city I was very impressed with from my previous trip.
Summary
The best and most convenient place to exchange Burmese money for traveling to Kengtung and Mong Yawng is Tachileik, as it is a border town with the most money exchange shops and banking services in the area. Prepare enough Kyat and carry small bills for easy local spending. Kengtung and Mong Yawng remain charming small towns with traditional culture worth exploring in Shan State, waiting for everyone to experience firsthand.
